I have a surgery date!

After finding out I have "Larry the Lump" in January, and after all the waiting I've done, I've now got a date for my surgery. It's next week. I'm now in a flap as I don't know what to pack for my hospital stay. I'm just looking forward to having the hopefully partial nephrectomy, and taking my time to recover. I don't know what treatment will be offered afterwards, so that will be another hurdle to cross. We've got this!

  • I’m glad you have your date. I recommend comfy, loose, easy to put on clothes with soft fabrics that won’t rub against the wound(s) and slip-on shoes so you don’t have to bend. I needed a dressing gown and slippers to walk to the pre-op area. I had a nightdress for my over night stay, plus the usual toiletries bag. Don’t forget a hairbrush. I found face wipes useful too.

I’m sure other people will have more ideas so I will just send you my best wishes for the op.

  • Thank you so much for your advice and good wishes. I've started packing a few bits, such as wet wipes and I won't forget the hairbrush!

  • You have got this Betsy ... bye bye Larry!

Perhaps a charger with a long cable for your mobile?  My top tip is always a spare pillow in the car for the journey home to place between wound and seat belt.  I've heard others say they found peppermints helpful for relieving trapped wind.

    Best wishes for next week.

  • Brilliant news...yes as others say...comfortable soft stuff to wear...I found some amazing leggings on amazon, not expensive. They don't have elastic they have I deep waist of stretchy fabric...my main discomfort for a few days was the trapped wind so peppermint or even better just shuffle and walk that hospital corridor. Eases the wind and removes toxins from anaesthetic faster... I took in my lavender spray, made up of essential oil and water. It kept me cool, calm and smelling nice. Wet wipes were also refreshing. I took books, and my needlework but tbh I slept quite a bit...good luck sweetie...here waiting for u when u get home...hugest hugs..

  • Hello Betsy26

Congratulations on getting your surgery date! Not long to wait...

As to what to pack for the hospital stay, there is loads of info on here, put together by Macmillan, with contributions from lots of forum users. I'm not sure exactly where to find the info, but you could try typing it into the 'search' box, and see what comes up!

I hope all goes well for you and Larry the Lump is sent packing!

  • Thank you so much for your kindness and support. I know I'll sleep for England after surgery, but will be pacing the corridor to get rid of the wind!!! I bought some new nighties today and a pair of snuggly slippers, a book, and toiletries so I'm fairly prepared - and ordered a long cable for my phone. Hugs back to you too my friend. xx

  • I know it sounds daft but I am all excited for you. The waiting is awful. You must be relieved even though it's a nerve wracking thing. But u will be fine sweety. U have the weekend to get your home nest all comfy...sending u healing hugs..Smiley

  • Thinking about u..good luck with your operation...I am busy with scans and medical stuff all week so I wish u luck and a dst recover.  Hugs abd love

  • Thank you Fleabane, it's much appreciated. Went for my pre-op assessment today, broke down when told was going to happen. It all seems so real now. I'll update you (and everyone else) when I'm awake and with it after the op. x

  • It was good to have a good cry. I did the same at my pre op. Think I had been so brave for everyone else, so when the nurse was so kind I just fell apart. We are all here for you to help u recover. Go girl, you got this..Smiley
