Immunotherapy side effects

Hello, my husband was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer and lung cancer approximately 3 months ago. He started immunotherapy just over 3 weeks ago and has just had his second treatment. He is being given Nivolumab and Ipilimumab and has also just had 5 radiotherapy treatments. He was fine for the first couple of weeks but now has joint pain, sweats and symptoms similar to a cold. I know these are to be expected and the doctors are happy that he’s doing well. He’s managing the pain with paracetamol and Oxycodone but he’s worried about how long he should expect to have these side effects as he is finding the pain and stiffness quite debilitating. He has another 2 treatments to go then he is going onto to just one of those but I can’t remember which ! We are hopeful the side effects will lessen once he’s on just one type of medication. Don’t get me wrong we are so thankful for the amazing care and treatment he is receiving but it would lift his mood considerably if he knew the side effects, especially the pain, would soon decrease.
Thanks so much everyone.

Unfortunately, no-one can predict whether side effects will decrease quickly, or become something that has to be 'managed'. I have had exactly the same treatment as your husband, with 4 sessions of the ipilimumab and novilumab combination, followed by monthly 'maintenance' sessions just using novilumab. I have been on this course for 15 months now.

Most people using this forum report that they experience less side-effects on immunotherapy than those on chemo. I personally have had two different side-effects during my treatment, one of which is being managed by using steroids. I am able to lead a completely 'normal' life, and hope that this continues.

Your husband's joint pain needs to be carefully monitored, and should be discussed with his oncology team, if it is affecting his day to day functioning. He may need different pain killers, or just reassurance that it will improve.

Do you have a cancer drop in centre, a Macmillan centre or a Maggie's centre near you? Many of them offer massage therapies, which could help your husband whilst he has this pain.

I hope your situation gets better soon!
