I saw my consultant yesterday who confirmed that I have a low grade cancer in my only kidney. Fortunately it is in a favourable position to be lopped off as he so eloquently put it haha (I actually like this guy!)
It appears that a 1½cm 'cyst' that was found back in 2013 wasn't actually a cyst and my consultant was very surprised that I had had no further follow ups or scans since 2014. I was actually discharged by my urologist in the January of 2014.
Anyhoo I am being referred to a big hospital to have a partial nephrectomy, hopefully apart from some scans now and then it should be the end of it?
Is anyone else living with just half a kidney? I'm positive, but a little apprehensive about how this will affect me, will it be life as usual after recovery?
Hi, I had a partial nephrectomy in Feb this year. Small low grade tumour like yours. Took me a couple of months to reach full recovery as I had some internal bleeding the day after surgery so had to have another operation to sort that out. Without that episode my recovery would have been sooner as I had to stay in hospital a few days longer. There is no noticeable difference with myself now. Feeling very fit and well. First 6 monthly scan all clear. Next one in another 6 months then if that’s clear yearly. Lots of painful wind after the robotic surgery but some of my pain was undetected bleeding as I began to feel sick. I think the nurses thought I was been a drama Queen until I passed out ! I was rushed for a CT scan and then they found the bleeding. It was sorted that night as an emergency so I can’t complain. You will be back to your self very quickly I am sure.
Thank you for your reply Cilla and sorry you had a hard time initially with the bleeding. I've lived very well with my solitary kidney since 2017, but I'm a little apprehensive about living with just a bit of one eek!
I wish it was being done at my local hospital as every time I've been to one of the bigger hospitals, I have ended up on the urology ward of my local hospital anyway due to infection or wounds popping!
I'm so happy to hear that you're doing so well now, gives me much hope ♡
You sound like a tough cookie so I am sure you will be just fine. If we look after our bodies the best we can too that helps eh. Plenty of exercise, no booze and a very healthy diet. I had a heart attack last year too ha ha so everything I do or eat focuses on been healthy. Treat your kidney like a person you’re caring for if you get me. Love and respect and it will look after you ! Take care
