Hi,

My mum had a radical nephrectomy on the 14th of February 2022 - clear cell carcinoma. 95mm pT2a tumour. Leibovich score 4. In December 2023 she started to feel nauseous and lost her appetite, and also her belly started to swallow. She was diagnosed: with peritoneal disease presenting with ascites, bilateral ovarian tumours were detected, and a biopsy confirmed clear cell carcinoma of the kidney. IMDC poor prognosis on the grounds of performance status, anemia had raised platelets. She started Carbozantinib 40mg a day and also was put on Steroids - Dexa 6mg a day. She had 3 drains since she started the treatment on the 2nd of March: 2l, 5.5l, and 6.4l. Has anyone experienced ascites with RCC? Are there any chances to go away with treatment?

  • Hello Roxi,

I am sorry to read about your Mum's cancer journey. It must have been hard for you to watch her go through the treatments so far. The ascites sounds really uncomfortable for Mum and I hope that when the fluid is drained it provides some relief to her. Maybe this is something that Mum or you could speak with her CNS about as they know the details of Mum's treatments.

The other thing you can do for medical questions is to use the Ask a Nurse area on here and they normally get back to you within 3 working  days. I will pop a link here in case it may help.

I have had a look for you and found some information on here about ascites which may help explain how it is managed. At the bottom of the page is some information on other ways you can contact Macmillan for support if you ever need to.

I hope this may help a bit, but please get in touch if there is anything else you need to support yourself or Mum.
