Junior Doctors strike

Was Diagnosed with cancer of the left Kidney End of March this year, was happy when things started to move pretty quickly with the pre-surgery assessment and then the anesthetic assessment to follow shortly afterward.

I got the date for my surgery just after the pre-surgery assessment, told it would be on the 4th of May due to the size of my tumor (11cm) it would be a radical nephrectomy, Yesterday I got a call from the hospital that due to Junior Doctors striking my surgery will be put back to the 26th of May but may be moved again if more strikes are scheduled.

Am really peeved off now as the last week I have started to get pain in my left side Kidney area And I have to wait a week before I can see anyone to get any help with the pain, I know Doctors don't get paid millions but they do get a lot more than me as I was medically retired 13 years ago due to Chronic cluster headaches, The entire country is facing the worst financial crisis since the 1920s and yet despite an oath to do no harm they go on strike forcing so many people to have to suffer for longer than they need to, I mean they knew what the pay and conditions when they became doctors and yet still chose to do the job so why do we have to suffer for their miss judgment?

I know this is more of a rant than maybe should be posted here but surely a doctor should know more than most of the pain and suffering cancer patients go through and yet they can still pull this sort of stunt, on the hole I have great respect for the NHS but right now I am so angry.

I am told they are asking for a 35% pay rise but that takes their pay over two more tax brackets meaning by the time they get their pay they will in fact just be 1% better of than they are now and for that the oath to do no harm becomes meaningless.

Sorry if this post offends anyone but as I'm sure most of you can agree, being told you have Cancer is no laughing matter as it fills one with fear and uncertainty and then you get told you can't have your op Because some doctor wants more money when just about everyone in the country is suffering financially and our burden will only get worse as our taxes go up to pay for their pay rise.

Once again sorry for the rant but I just need to let it out as this really did hurt getting the news when I was so close to my operation and the start of recovery.

  • Totally understand you are one of the most impacted by this strike having your operation cancelled.  It's not a nice place to be in.   You pay your tax and now you need the healthcare you have paid for.

I don't view the doctors strike quite the same way.   Perhaps I would if personally impacted like you.  There are lots of professions striking at the moment and I see it as a problem with society, capitalism and the inequality "we" have allowed to grow over the last 30 years.  We have the biggest gap between the rich and poor in the UK globally and it's been growing steadily.    The wrong people go into politics who are devolved from joe public and motivated by the wrong things (self) when it should be improving the country for the benefit of everyone.

There is something wrong with Drs training that they have to work 80+ hour weeks at the start of their career, in my opinion.  I am so against the NHS (and education) being used as a political football.
