in January 2023 I was told my kidney tumour is 3.5cm by my urologists and that tumour remains stable and has not changed size in the 12 months since first diagnoses.I was sure used to be bigger but accepted his word.  When I got home I checked the letters and sure enough in January 2022 my oncologist told me I had  a tumour 4.126 cm big.  In June the oncologist said it was 3.7cm in size.  So my question is how accurate are the measurement and what should I do about the discrepancy ?

  • Hi Feb 22 we told by consultant that our tumour was 4.5 cm and would be removed and anything below 4 cm was a watch and wait.

  • Hi - I asked my oncologist about how they measure kidney tumours objectively over time.  For example, how do you not know they are just measuring the smallest diameter now?  He acknowledged my question and was able to confirm there was a method, but he didn't know the details as it's a radiology protocol.   We were waiting for the radio report once and whilst peering at the screen my onco was able to make virtual adhoc measurements.  The only measurements you want to be comparing are those from radiology.

I never got measurements for mine.  It was just referred to as "large" - oh dear!!  It didn't bother me and if the detail was important to me I would have asked.  A year on (Dec 22) I was given the radiology report to take home and that was the first time I had measurements; 3.4 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm.
