Evening everyone, I'm six weeks post op after a right radical nephrectomy. I've been healing well so far until the last couple of days. In the past 48 hours I've had several excruciating stabbing pains in my right side, I'm due to follow up with my consultant next Monday. Was just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar and if it's fairly normal and to be expected???? Thanks.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you're experiencing stabbing pains in your side. I don't know if this is normal but it would probably be a good idea to give your hospital team a call to check with them.

  • Stabbing pains isnt good. Dontbwait get checked out. Ring gp, or your oncology nurse..tjey always listen. Xx

  • Stabbing pain definitely sounds like the sort of thing you need to report to your kidney nurse - and your consutant.

But to add that, after my operation it took 3 months for the stabbing pains to disappear. They were usually only when I sneezed or coughed, so I kept well away fro anyone with a cold!

    Good luck.

  • Hi Arney, I had a left radical open nephrectomy back in August, I still get the odd stabbing pain. I have been told that there is internal stitches, like twine, that won't dissolve for at least another month or two. Any movement/exercise that engages the abdominal muscles risks damage to muscles, i.e. tearing, and this is the stabbing pain I am experiencing from time to time, and not always at the time of contraction, though mostly. You might want to try and find out from the consultant/surgeon if and what the extent of any internal stitching? You also need to take into account your health and physical strength and fitness prior to the op. I played county level squash and cricket (not county) so was pretty fit, but still have a good few months of healing left.
