Upcoming kidney removal

Hi all, my name is Craig,  I am about to have my right kidney removed. I’ve been told it will be in April. I had a call from the hospital today, they want me to go for a chest CT scan tomorrow, I’m not really sure why this is being done, but I guess they may be checking to see if it has spread at all. It would be interesting to know if this is just standard procedure, I should have asked, I know. I’ve been told that the tumour is contained within the kidney, which is good. My understanding is that the tumour is likely to be cancerous, but because of where it’s located, a biopsy can’t be done, so there’s no alternative to surgery, and the whole kidney will need to be taken out. It’s been under active surveillance, and although it hasn’t grown much, if any, it has changed in appearance and nature, I think.
All the best to everyone

Craig

  • PS. I think I’ve posted this in the wrong area, I’d meant for it to introduce myself, but I can’t see a way a to transfer it over,

    Craig.

  • Hi Craig - CT scan is standard diagnosis and monitoring method for kidney cancer.   Mine needed a CT scan to confirm diagnosis, prior to CT, it was just suspected from a ultrasound scan.  Then a biopsy confirms the cancer type.   It's good it's been caught before it spreads.  CT scan will also confirm size.    They'll be able to tell you the cancer type after they remove the kidney (I think).  Good luck.

  • Hi Mmum, thank you for replying, and for the information. It’s much appreciated. I had the chest CT scan today, they said they’d squeezed my appointment in, and from what I can gather, the Consultant will receive the results quite quickly, either way, I’m just waiting for the surgery date now, supposedly in April.

    All the best to you,

    Kind regards,

    craig

  • Hello Craig,

im new to this forum, I got the exact same diagnosis as yourself 5 weeks ago. I go into hospital on Monday for an ebulization which is a procedure to stop the blood and oxygen to the kidney and then on Tuesday I get the kidney removed. I’m very nervous also, be positive mate and take care of yourself.

    Hi

I had some of my left Kidney removed along with a cyst attached. It was discovered with a ultrasound scan. It was then confirmed with a CT Scan and then a further CT Scan to make sure it had not spread. It was confirmed as Cancer after removal and they are happy that it all has been removed. It was stage 1 so I’m very lucky I do not need chemo or radiotherapy. I wish you all the best take care.

  • Hello H, wishing you the very best of luck, hope all goes well for you, I know it’s nerve-racking mate, I’ll be thinking of you. Please let us know how you get on if you can,

    All the best

    Craig

  • Thank you pal and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Take care mate you will get through this Thumbsup tone1Pray tone1

  • Hi Janina,

Great news that it had not spread and that they were able to remove what they needed to for you to be well. All the best to you.

  • Hi Craig

please keep your spirits up I had a similar experience from a CT scan for a appendicitis to being referred to an consultant, after careful monitoring over a year it was decided to remove the tumour which unfortunately meant the removal of my kidney. I totally understand your concern as it's the fear of the unknown, have you been given a Macmillan nurse.

It sounds very standard and very similar to my diagnosis.

All the best Craig stay positive.

    Mike

  • Hi Mike thanks for your positive message, no I haven’t been given a Macmillan nurse, I was just given a Macmillan card by the Consultant. My tumour had been under surveillance for almost two years, I was actually supposed to have the last scan in July 21, but it didn’t happen until January this year. I give my self a reality check with the fact that a great deal of people have gone through/are going through this, and many are in a lot worse situation than me.

    cheers mate

    all the best
