Delayed diagnosis and outright lies before getting properly treated.

Hi,

Firstly I know negligence is not a comfortable subject and many of you may have had great treatment from the get go.   If so , please don't feel the need to criticise because I am one angry person and I am not finding huge support.  I won't bore you with the shambles which was my treatment locally, just that the missed diagnosis was only discovered on two scans, several months old ...found by a Rheumatologist! Bizarre.   Local hospital then lied further, did nothing but claimed to have referred me to be evaluated by a Multidisciplinary team.  They did no such thing but told me MDT decided to do nothing for 6 months.   This was untrue.  I sought referral elsewhere and had radical right nephrectomy. Cells were Grade 4.   So cancer diagnosis only discovered by chance and then if I took their word I would not even be being reviewed until November!

My family were confused and angry feeling I was either lying when I said it wasn't cancer or lying when I said it was.  I believe I had 6 admissions to local hospital in the earlier part of year... then surgery elsewhere, then one further admission, so eight in total...lots of missed opportunities.   My local hospital has been in special measures.

Have sadly found that this topic is not one any support agency wishes to talk about.

Now I know how aggressive the tumour was I feel justified in taking action.  Without luck and a friendly Rheumatologist I would still be suffering dreadful symptoms and with no diagnosis. I was fobbed off with everything from ' women's trouble' to constipation.

Wish me well as I wish all of you well. This is not about money, it is about accountability.

  • Hi and I don't blame you for having a rant it's your right to do so. I have for a few months now been told I have kidney cancer by my local hospital, but been referred to another hospital with a special unit. But they won't offer me an operation they say it is small. It's 1.4 cm  so I'm in a crap place at the moment, and I want to wish a good recovery sir

  • Hi Mark,

I'm Dawn.   So, not even a biopsy for you?  Mine was in such a bad place that they felt biopsy would probably cause a lot of blood loss, so they just plunged on with the whole thing, and it was good that they did.  It is a heavy thing when you feel like your body is being invaded by something. I hope the medics are going to look after you attentively.

  • Are you doing okay today, Mark?  Which part of the country are you. I am on the Isle of Wight but all my care is in Southampton.

Hi , I understand your anger at the missed opportunities of diagnosis but as kidney cancer is relatively slow growing have you asked how much difference a few months would have made as this may help you cope . Have you made a formal complaint to pals ?

Sorry to say but with cancer you have to count your blessings , it was operable , Not everyones is ! You don't mention treatment further treatment so did the kidney removal get rid of all visible disease ?   Have you received counselling as discussing things with someone who is trained to deal with your anger could make life better and put you in a better place for your recovery.  Good luck

  • Grade 4, the most aggressive. Liebovich score of 6.  Cancer doesn't stand alone , I have a number of other serious illnesses. PALS?  NO Sweetheart I went to Chief Exec. There is no obligation to go through PALS and in my area there is no independence as they are often seconded to work at clerical jobs in clinics.  You, quite obviously, don't know the area I live in or you wouldn't be saying these things. 5 months of paraneoplastic phenomenon, peeing 40 times a day, with limited mobility.and lacking the strength to even use a knife and fork. ..go figure how easy that is....still can't stop..off to count my blessings.  I will be sure to count you twice! ( or maybe I will just count twice the  blessing that I am not like you)   I know from other scans that the cancer wasn't there a year ago, not that I owe you any explanation.  Just a matter of interest, what were you doing when the rest of us were receiving attributes like empathy, whatever it was I hope it was worth it.

  • I'm in Wigan but under Manchester not been on here for a few days

  • Hi Mark, hope you are okay. No, I haven't been on here either.   Sending Best Wishes,

    xx

  • Hi I hope with everything going on with you, you're doing as good as can be. My missus is writing to pals so we can get answers to some questions we didn't think about., when we had last meeting 9 weeks ago
