Operation Partial Nephrectomy Recovery

I'm 41 and in 2 weeks will be having a partial nephrectomy to remove a small tumour from the end of my kidney.

Compared to many others on here this is less severe problem and surgery but I'm still anxious.

I'm told I will be back at work in 2 weeks with a further 2 to 4 weeks for full recovery. I'm relatively healthy and enjoy excercise.

Does anyone have any experience of how tired I may become after surgery? Does this go away after a couple of weeks or will I feel tired working in the office etc for a long time afterwards?

I do a small 4km run about 3 times a week. I'm using that as a benchmark to recovery. How long before I can do that again?

  • Hi

It's natural to feel anxious about the thought of having surgery, I know I did. I'd never had a general anaesthetic and I was worried about having a canula inserted, more than the after effects, but everyone in the surgical team took trouble to put me at ease and make the experience as bearable as possible.

I didn't have the same type of operation as you, so my experience probably wouldn't be comparable, but I was told to take it easy for the first week and that by two weeks I should be feeling back to normal. Do you have a CNS (cancer nurse specialist) as she should be able to help with your questions regarding how tired you might feel and when you can safely start exercise again. If not you could post this in the ask a nurse section of the online community and one of the cancer specialist nurses will aim to reply within 3 working days.

I'm also tagging this group's Community Champion into my reply as she may know how this type of operation will affect you.

It would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Wishing you all the best x

  • Thanks for the response. I will ask a nurse and work out how to update my profile.

  • If you click on the wording 'your profile' in my previous reply to you it will take you to the instructions on how to update your profile Slight smile
