Hi, I finished ABVD 6 cycles for Hodgkin Lymphoma in October. They removed the Vinblastin after cycle 4, but I'm left with neuropathy that affects my mobility. Basically I can't walk well. Before cancer I ran 10 miles a week and I'm really struggling to find a way back to the fit and slim(er) person I was. I have had physio and have a orthotic aid for drop foot whcih stop me falling and slightly improves my gait. Overall I sense it's improving but at a snails pace. People are really lovely but I feel I'm not the person I was and not the person I thought I would be. This upsets me deeply but I don't talk about it.
I feel I am grateful for being cured of cancer but the price on my quality of life is high and people don't get that.
Are there any tales to keep me optimistic or forums specifically for this issue?
Hi again Room with a View and well done navigating across to this group.
You know my story from my other answer but safe to say recovery from bad Peripheral neuropathy can take far longer than you would want.
If you are seeing improvement even at a snail's pace - its improvements. I think we don't totally understand what the body goes through during treatment and this results in the long convalescence.
My Consultant told me that going through treatments like these was like doing a boxing match and a marathon every day over the months of treatments and this was done without any training. Think doing the London Marathon without any training and you had to finish it as your life depended on it……. this is the journey you have been on so it most likely will take much longer than you would think to get back to some normality - it took me a good 2 years and I was 60 at the start of my recuperation.
Your body has been through far more than you imagine so be kind to yourself, give yourself a break as you are doing good and honestly this will pass.
Hi , I had ABVD and this gave me neuropathy.. only in my feet , it came on quickly. It felt like me legs were concrete and even walking upstairs was difficult however slowly it got better ..it took probably 12 months for it to improve where I could walk comfortably ( I , like you was really active ) . I am not sure if it will totally get better , maybe you just get use to it but it does improve . I wore well padded shoes ( Skechers , good trainers , etc ) .. that seemed to help too ..
likr everything, patient .. hard I know , but it does get better !
lisa .
Thank you. I was impatient, but physio told me to think months/years and it's good to hear from those who have.
Hi, me too but it does get better . I’m about 1.5 years since it first effected me and I’m fine now . Make sure you keep your feet warm in winter, that helps .. hope it starts getting better soon .
