Shielding question

Hi,

I'm luckily 2 and half years in remission from hodgkins lymphoma. In the first lockdown I was told to shield, which I did to the best of my ability.

My haematologist at the time said 2 years after treatment you can still be extremely vulnerable, but after 2 years the risk will be much less.

I've been sent another letter that advises me to stay at home as much as possible in the last few days, and if I do a job I can't do from home I am advised not to work.

I feel fit and healthy, I am a runner and a fairly healthy eater, i have normal bloods and no other health issues, I'm an optometrist and so I am in close contact with lots of people, obviously in full PPE.

My question is does anyone know why I still am classed as high risk? Is anyone else in my position been told they arent high risk?

Thank you Blush

  • So I am 5 years post my last treatment for NHL and I am still seen as ‘very’ vulnerable but this is based on my treatment journey and post treatment ‘left overs’ like a reduced immune system.

You do need to take guidance from your team as you will still be on the original shielding register.

  • I too think you should take advice from your team, having had a blood cancer. Plus being an optometrist does put you in close contact with people, even in full PPE some risk must still be present?

Our daughter is at risk still (and will be for the foreseeable future as she needs weekly immunoglobulins) as a freelance musician. She hasn’t done any ‘outside’ work  since February and misses those gigs, but is managing to work from home.

Keeping fit and well is incredibly important so do keep up the exercise!
