Hi all,
I just started cycle 2 of Chemo for HL, having ABVD treatment.
Has anyone else experienced severe bone aches and pains? I had them in my legs the first cycle, so extreme i could barely walk. Yet this cycle they're more focused in my arms.
Any experiences or insight would be a real help.
Thanks
E
Hi , are you having any injections to encourage your bonemarrow to work harder and increase your blood counts? Bone aches and pains are normal with this and taking something like Claritin or Piriton Antihistamines can actually help.
Thanks, I'll give the antihistamines a try.
No I've not been given anything for bonemarrow, I had my bloods done last week and they've said my count was above average at this stage and can go lower yet and still be safe. No mention of any injections.
Ok, so from my long experience being treated for NHL and not looking at injections as an issue, you do have to remember that your body is trying to get over the initial shock that treatments like ABVD will bring.
The chemo does work all around the body and I did find aches, pains, stiffness, cramps appeared in random places.
As long as your team are happy with how things are going and that they know all the ongoing changes you just have to go with the flow and ride this out.
Peripheral Neuropathy Can also be a problem so do check out this link.

Hi, just to add to Mikes helpful advice, the antihistamine to try is just Claritin (generic name Loratidine) it gets prescribed in the USA particularly for bone aches from the white cell booster injections. I suspect Piriton will just send you to sleep!
but if your bloods are all ok it may just be that your bone marrow is doing the job on its own? So actually you might still benefit from the antihistamine?
Hope it eases for you and your treatment goes smoothly.
Hugs xxx

Hi,
When I started my first cycle of AVBD, the body aches and pains were so bad....I was in bed for most of the 2 weeks until the next session. I literally couldn’t do anything. It really hit me hard.
Since then I’ve seemed to have just a day or two like that (usually on day 3). I thought I’d worked out a little routine.
But I’ve just gone into cycle 4 and it’s been really bad again - it’s been almost a week and I’m still in a lot of pain, so have had to rest in bed a lot. It’s been my legs mostly but I’ve found the same, today seems to be more my arms.
Did you take anything for the pain?
Hope this helps.
Hi,
I have been given lots of different types of pain killers, we tried everything. I ended up with morphine for when it gets really bad, nothing else helps at all and the morphine just makes me comfortable enough to get through the pain whilst in bed.
Have the doctors given you anything to help with your pains HLjourney?
Its strange to have eased for a few cycles then come back. I just finished cycle 2 and my pains lasted about a week, mainly in my arms, luckily this time my legs were ok enough to move around a little each day.
But there's a long way to go yet and how intense the pain will be seems to be unpredictable.
Hello, sorry for the delay!
I was not good at all after I sent the previous message. My oncologist decided to give me an extra week off, so I didn’t have chemo last week in the end. He also took out one of the drugs to make it a little easier as I have been having bad chest pains and breathing difficulties at times as well.
I had the second session of cycle 4 today. Hopefully it’s not as bad this time
How are you doing now? X
