Hi everyone- diagnosed in March with modular sclerosing HL 2A. I’ve had four treatments (2 cycles) so far.  I didn’t have much pain at all before treatment (8cm mediastinal mass) with chest and neck involvement, but since starting ABVD, my neck and chest and back and armpits are aching so much more.  Feels like tugging and aching especially in my chest when I breathe. The pain is manageable without medication, just more stressful feeling it still there.  The palpable nodes on my neck have gone down.

Anyone have experience with this? I have my interim pet scan this week and so stressed with these continued pains.

Thanks so much and prayers for us all.

  • That’s all possible, you can get aches as the tumours die. I hope that’s exactly what it is, and your scan is clear (or at least showing hugely good results)

Hi, I'm not sure whether this will help you at all but I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms and I have had two treatments of ABVD so far (first cycle down).  I am stage 2A unfavourable with bulky mediastinal mass and as you mentioned, I also didn't have any pain prior to treatment commencing.  I have seen a few people mention that they experienced these kind of pains early on in treatment so I am hoping, as you are, that it is the ABVD doing it's thing.  I mentioned this to my specialist on my last visit, as I ended in in A&E after my first treatment to get the chest pain checked out and everything was normal.  Everyone reacts differently to the treatment I guess but other than this aching/tugging feeling, I generally feel better in myself and the itching and cough which sent me to the doctor in the first place have cleared up so I can only hope that things are heading in the right direction.  Good luck with your scan this week, I hope all goes well.

Hi missmegz, I just wondered how you were getting on with your chest pains now?  Mine have settled down a little bit after my third treatment but they are still present every now and again.  I hope that your scan went well, I have mine booked in a couple of weeks and am definitely starting to feel the scanxiety kick in!

Hi! I had my interim PET scan and it showed complete metabolic response after 4 abvd treatments :). I guess the pain was the cancer dying and things shrinking and moving around! There are still enlarged lymph nodes (but all decreased by half or more in size and showed no active cancer cells).  Praying and knowing the same for you!! Thanks for checking in and keep me posted on your good news.  Still a long way to go for me (12 total) which is hard physically and mentally, but knowing it’s working was a needed boost.

    Hello

Thats such amazing and exciting news. My husband has had similar results in the last month and it was such a relief to know it was working and I know there is some way to go but it really lifts the spirits. So pleased to hear your news and hoping the rest of your treatment goes quickly . X

Oh missmegz that's great news!  I'm sure that will keep you going through the hard times over the next few months.  I know how you feel, I am scheduled for 12 treatments in total too.  You're more than a quarter of the way through though!  I have my forth treatment on Tuesday and am enjoying my good weekend before feeling pretty average for a week :) I will definitely keep you updated on how things are going Slight smile

  • Hi ,

that’s fabulous news! Now to concentrate on trying to minimise the worst side effects of treatment, stay positive and stay safe! Are they dropping the Bleomycin for the remaining treatments, as they sometimes do?

Thank you all! Yes, they’ve dropped the bleo since I had complete response in order to minimize lung toxicity down the road.  The aching is better without the bleo, but still feel tugging and some discomfort where mass was/is.

Hi missmegz, I just thought I would give you an update as I had my interim PET this week.  I also achieved complete metabolic response with all areas now completely clear!  I am so shocked and amazed at the result but so happy.  Still a long way to go (7 more treatments to be exact!) but it is such a relief to know that it is working as it should :) All affected areas have shrunk by around 75% as well which is also fantastic news.  I hope you are still managing to cope well with the side effects.  I still have some discomfort in my chest but nowhere near as bad as at the start of treatment.  My specialist also decided to continue with the bleomycin despite the clear scan. I'm not sure of his reasoning for that but can only assume it was because I had an unfavourable diagnosis to start with.  All the best with your treatments, always happy to chat if anything is on your mind Slight smile
