I have a Dear Friend who's sister was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma. She had her 1st Chemo treatment yesterday and went to emergency room today with excoriating burning pain of her tounge, mouth and throat. She had no mouth sores or fever, so they sent her home on Advil every 6 hrs.
She is still in excoriating pain, says it feels like her mouth and throat are on Fire. They did say it was possible nerve pain from Vinblastine.
Is there anyone who has experienced this side effect and if so, what where you given to relieve the pain.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
Prayers for All
My daughter had jaw pain due to vincristine (North American pediatric protocol). She needed morphine at 5AM. A nurse told us early mucositis and vincristine neuropathy can be confused before the mouth sores become obvious. Kids are worse than adults and first dose is worse than the rest. Hope that helps.
I have both long acting and instant release oxycodone for pain management as well as paracetamol.
ED doctors in general aren't going to be well versed in oncology and the side effects of cancer treatment, so if going to the ED is your only option it's best to insist that they consult the oncologist/haematologist on call. I was given an alert card which says that if I present at the ED they must run urgent blood tests and obs, regardless of why I present.
She should not have simply been sent home. Her specialist should have been consulted and if her specialist wasn't available then the haematologist on call should have been consulted. She needs to contact her consultant or one of their registrars. There are multiple options available for managing her pain but she needs to make the right people aware that she's had a severe reaction to her initial treatment so it can be sorted out ASAP.
I'm so sorry to hear your Precious young daughter is going through cancer treatment, Heartfelt Prayers lifted for her
Yes, this does help and I Greatly appreciate your quick response. I will pass this information onto my Friend.
God Bless you and your family, Theresa
Hi Lolie, I am so sorry you are going through cancer treatment, Heartfelt Prayers lifted for you
Thank you for your quick response and yes she needed to be evaluated. I will pass this information along to my Friend and hopefully she can get some help tomorrow.
God Bless you, Theresa
So sad such pain has been experienced. I agree that ED (I assume you’re in the USA by your terminology plus times of posting?) staff are not going to be experienced in haematology (it is a very complex study) so do seek opinions from your team as soon as possible.
as far as pain goes with ABVD daughter didn’t really have much, her problem was nausea which she totally kept to herself. Her pain came with tougher chemo for stem cell transplants, Particularly the second, donor one, which she got through and is now doing better
hope something will help!

Hi,
I really struggled with this sfter my first dose of ABDV chemo. I couldn't find many other people who had the same problem. It felt like i had acid in my mouth but no soars. I struggled to talk and eat. It lasted 3 days. The second day was the worst.
I found that warm home made honey and lemon drink helped me. It soothed my mouth. Also, lolly ices help.
I have had 5 lots of chemo now and ive never had that pain again since. Ive had a bit of jaw ache but nothing compared to the acid mouth.
I hope she feels better soon because i know how raw it feels.
