Hi, I started ABVD chemotherapy 10 days ago for stage 2E Hodgkin’s lymphoma. So far the side effects have been minimal and I have been taking the recommended anti-nausea tablets. The last three nights I’ve been getting pains in my right forearm and hand, which has been keeping me awake. This is the same hand that received the intravenous treatment. Any suggestions?

  • Hi, its likely the D that's caused this, in abvd, advise your team this happened and ask for the drug to be pushed more slowly and the can push extra fluid with it too, I also believe heat pads can be offered to help as well, hopefully they can manage this and it does not remain an issue. also make sure they alternate arms each treatment, it helps protect the veins.

    Hi John

thanks for your suggestions. I’ll discuss with the specialist nurse. I did use heat cushions last time and they really helped while the drugs were being given.

  • Hi Owen,

keep a careful eye on that arm, too, and if you see any problem do phone in, your nurse would much rather you ‘bother’ them than have an ongoing problem. John is right, though, ask for the Doxy to slow down and the carrying fluids to be speeded up with your next dose. And alternating arms (or even asking for a PICC line) will help.

    Hi,

I was experiencing the same arm pain and it was getting progressively worse - stopped me sleeping at night. So, I have now had a PICC line put in, even though I'm three quarters the way through. But I must say, with this first lot of chemo since having the line put in I haven't had any pain as of yet (touchwood) and I also didn't have to use heat pads when the drug was going in either. So, I would really recommend this if your pain starts to become worse.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment!
