Hi all need abit of advice.

Im 7 weeks post treatment.  My mucus has dried up and now have drymouth ,chronic some days, but im coping. My weight up to a week and a half ago has been stable.  Saw the dietician 2 weeks ago and realised I've only been have 1200 calories a day. 3 ensures. Think because im drinking so much water ,I wasn't hungry and somehow dropped from 5 to 3 feeds, although at the time my weight was stable.

Since seeing the dietician she's given me shots to add to milk which gives me an extra 250 calories.  I cant eat solids yet. I've found that since seeing her I've lost 4lbs.which is weird as im now taking around 1900 calories. Im trying to take more but feel im just constantly feeding  every hour or so to pack in the calories.  Which is now giving me reflux.

I must admit I had a day where I felt fine and did a bit too much in the garden and was exhausted after. So im wondering if that didn't help, and im due at the oncologist this week  for a follow up on a chest scan for a nodule they found originally.  So im stressing over that, anyhow im warbling now because im anxious. Did anyone else find their weight dropped and any ideas for what I can do to pack in the calories as I find the ensures offer the best rate per amount. Im lactose intolerant so struggle a bit with off the shelf stuff.

Thanks Tracy

  • Hi Lotty. Yes I lost nothing during treatment then lost a stone. I had no appetite for six months. None at all. When I was pump fed I managed on 1000 calories a day. Never needed nor could stomach the 2500 they kept on at me about.

  • Hi Dani

Thanks for your reply. Its stressed me out a bit which doesn't help. Thinking why suddenly have I lost it when I've upped the intake, doesn't make sense.  Im seeing the dietician again this week, so maybe she'll offer me something else to take.

  • Hi Tracy

If the Esures are doing the job then keep on them for as long as you need them.  I was taking them for months after treatment - slowly reducing the number as my eating took over.  Even a year later I would still have the occasional one with me if I were going out and unsure of finding something suitable to eat.  At one stage I went onto pump feeding using the big bags of food.  I found those much more difficult to keep down than the Fortisips I was on.  I could pump in the Fortisips quickly but the bags needed a very slow trickle to stay down...

Fatigue is a problem for most of us for a few months after treatment, but I doubt that is related to weight loss.

Before treatment I put on weight and managed to keep it on during treatment.  Post treatment I lost around 10kg, but that was planned to get me back to my normal weight.  Even so I was probably still piling in around 3000 calories per day.  See if you can speak to your dietitian when you go in for your appointment.

Fingers crossed the nodule is of no concern.  Hugs

I had two. Old age and a previous infection. They are very common.

  • I lost 4 stone due to issues with the Chemoradiotherapy, luckily I could afford to as I was already overweight, the Ensure 2cal caused acid reflux so my dietitian changed brand which helped a lot, overnight slow PEG feeding also made a big difference...I got started on solid food and supplented it with Ensure orally that was the real start of taste and appetite recovery.... Guinness alcohol free was one thing I could tolerate well...and it got a few calories in.
