Post Radiology Rhino Sinusitis

I’m 3 years post diagnosis & treatment.  I was T2N1M0 so the 6 week ChemoRadio schedule.

its only now, in the past 3 months, my sinuses are so debilitating.  I have spoken to my oncologist about it, it is a common side effect, but there doesn’t appear anything much I can do to alleviate it.  I have been given an Otrivine spray but that has a limited usage to a week at a time. I’ve done allergy prick tests to see if by some chance I’ve suddenly developed an allergy, they’ve come up negative.  I’m taking antihistamines every day which ease the nasal drip and stinging nose to some extent, but it’s not ideal.  I struggle with facial pressure, headache, nasal drip, ear disturbance ( fizzing and deafness) which I assume is gunk. it’s getting worse for sure and of course the wheels start turning.  Have any of you experienced this and how do you ease the discomfort.

thanks so very much

  • My Nose used to drip when I was eating but that stopped, was ok for a couple of years and is now dry.

  • Hi Nicky. My surgeon is also an ENT specialist and he was really helpful when I experienced some of the symptoms you describe.I have had a double maxillectomy over time and the fluid build up in my sinuses had become a problem.  He ended up putting in a gromet  in my left ear that helped with draining the fluid away. I also had difficulty breathing and had become a mouth breather.I had a day surgery at another time where he enlarged my turbinates and it gave me instant relief. Could you be referred to an ENT doctor to get an evaluation to see if there is anything that can be done to help. I still get a runny nose but it is not as bad as it used to be and is manageable.

  • Thankyou for that Sophie. My oncology professor is an ENT specialist too, so I’ll speak with him at the next appointment.  It’s just so frustrating & uncomfortable.  Rolling eyes onward ho.
