Botox to help with drooling?

I have had 2 maxillectomies and a partial left mandibulectomy over time. I now have virtually no top lip so they do not meet with my bottom lip on the right side. I have a slight droop on the right side of my mouth from the surgeries. I have an issue with drooling out of the right  side of my mouth which has resulted in angular chelitis which is hard to shift (crack to corner of my mouth caused by a fungal or bacterial infection caused by trapped saliva and drooling) I have an ointment for that which gets it under control for a short time only. I use vaseline gel in between bouts of the angular chelitis to try and protect the area. I have been offered a lip graft by my maxiofacial surgeon but am reluctant to have more surgery. I was wondering if botox might help with plumping up my lips on the right side. I do have a scheduled routine appointment with my surgeon so I will discuss with him then.

Has anyone had any experience with using botox to help with drooling. I don't want the botox they inject into the salivary glands to reduce the saliva as I have little enough as it is so don't want to reduce it even more. Just trying to think of alternatives to the lip graft option which may or may not work to help with the drooling.

Hi Lyn. I saw your post but as I have no experience if this myself I was hoping somebody else might. Alas no

I have a friend who is a plastic surgeon and she says that Botox and fillers are commonly used to help drooping lips after botched facelifts. Maybe discuss this possibility?
    Do let us know. Hugs

  • Thanks for that Dani. It was just a punt that someone may have some experience in this area. I do have a drooping lip so I will definitely follow up with my surgeon and take his advice. The dribbling out of the side of my mouth is proving a bit of a challenge. Now I know how babies feel when they are teething lol. On the bright side the drooling is not constant in the a.m. but seems to ramp up in the afternoon and evening so I at least have a partial break for some of the day. One of those long term side effects.

    Thanks again

  • I have a similar issue with my right bottom lip drooping post op still and I have done filler which def helps a little bit.

I have more dry mouth issues than drooling however I used to work at shriners and patients with cerebral palsy came in all the time for botox injections inside their mouth to help with the drooling and it worked wonderfully. I wouldn't go to an aesthetician to perform that part though

  • That is so encouraging thank you.  I'm definitely going to give it a go if my surgeon is O.K. with it and fingers crossed it might help with the drooping lip at least. Not sure about the injection of botox inside the mouth as I do get dry mouth on and off during the day and then it stops and I get the drooling. Pros and cons.

How long did your filler last? Don't want to get the 'trout pout' look. Did yours look fairly natural?

    Thanks so much
