A year ago today I heard those words, you've got cancer!!!. I had a small cell carcinoma on my tonsil bed ( tonsils removed as a child). T2N0M0, I had 47 lymph nodes removed by neck dissection all which where clear. Week later I had TORS surgery but suffered a major bleed and had to have tongue zapped to stop bleeding. I was very lucky and had good margins so no radiotherapy or chemo, just being watched.
I sailed through all this and never really got down etc I considered myself to be very lucky.
A year on and things are still OK, suffer abit of trouble swallowing but my mental health is at an all time low! I work in a school and have had swollen vocal chords so off work at mo. All I seem to do is cry . I'm guessing this is probably normal after going through so much.
Not sure why I wrote this guess I'm just reaching out to anyone else having a tough time.
Big hugs for you. I think we all get low occasionally and I know the stress of watchful waiting can be quite high - I was on it for 4 years. Make sure you look after yourself and reach out to your GP/clinical team if you need to talk this through with a professional.
Hi Lindielu, it's perfectly normal to have low points along the way, being told you have cancer is a lot to get your head around, then the treatment and recovery, is also very challenging. I remember I had some real dark days; it does get better though and you think of it less, but I know it does take some getting over, this forum helped me a lot, it still does come to that, it's a place where we all know how each of us feel and what we have been through, so reach out on here any time you want to.
Ray.
Most of us will have been in dark places, diagnosis, treatment and recovery are traumatic, things do get better but flashbacks/PTSD can cause mental health problems, tell your GP/oncology teams about this as they can help...and keep posting on here...we all understand where you are coming from.
Michael
