Hi all. I am day 10 of partial glossectomy on right lateral mid tongue, 2p size removal and 1cm depth. Only T1. I have no fever, no discharge and speaking better than ever expected but yesterday and today I am very conscious of the area and it feels lumpy and stinging and burning. Ihave no trouble swallowing but tongue hurts then. Chatgpt (I know I shouldn't!) said days 7 to 14 can be peak periods as stitches dissolving and nerves healing as swelling subsides its very sore. Is this anyone else's experience. I seem to be in more discomfort moving tongue now than when it more swollen. But no temp, and no bleeding or nasty saliva.

I would be so thankful for any advice please and thankyou for your time x

  • Hi Sue. I notice your post hasn’t had any replies. I can’t personally help as I didn’t have surgery but my advice would be to contact your CNS to see if your surgeon can look at what’s happening

  • Hi Sue im the same as Dani and had no surgery but as re Dani's advice seek help from your assigned specialist nurse they are a brilliant help xx

  • Thankyou Susie x

  • My glossectomy was abandoned but experience of tonsillectomies (agony) and neck dissections would suggest ChatGPT is about right.  Hang on in there and speak to your GP for some pain relief if it becomes too bad.

  • Good evening Sue1959, i personally have not had this cancer as mine were in other areas of the head and neck, sometimes these feelings /sensations are just everything settling down and recovering from the surgery. It sounds as if you have made a very good recovery, as the tongue does quite a few jobs i.e helping to swallow, taste, move food around the mouth, speaking, and also keeping the mouth moist. I would have thought you were due for a check-up with your consultant very soon; if not, then please contact your team so it puts your mind at rest. All the best for your continued recovery, take care.

  • Hi

i do remember my husband having pain when the stitches dissolved and also various nerve pains during healing. Have your team check it over but I would say it’s part of the healing process x

  • Thankyou so much Dora, that is reassuring. It feels like a painful ulcer but just in the one place. I was trying to avoid trek to hospital if its healing. And I did have a glass of wine as presumed 10 days ok, but it stung! I do hope your husband has or is recovering eell. Thanks again x
