hi

i finished my treatment on the 12th Sep ,30 radiotherapy and 5 chemo,im still having problems with hair loss ? is this normal..my hair is long and used to be incredibly thick now its so thin a ponytail would just look silly..but ive still got lots of long strands coming out and now starting to get worried.i did lose all of my hair at the back on the base of my head but thats growing back slowly but what i have left of my long hair is still coming out big time..I am being very gentle with it i have had a blood test which shows my iron etc is satisfactory.i was thinking it could be a thyroid problem but that would have showed in the blood test i think.

Any advice will be much appreciated

i have just seen in Dec i had a tsh test which shows abnormal,my Jan 26 blood test had at4 test which shows normal but no tsh test in Jan 2026

update

Lol im not sure how you add on to your posts lol i end up all over the place hahaha

Well,Ive been called back to the Gp, Turns out ive had 2 abnormal TSH results not just one. i don't understand why it took me phoning to ask whats going on and also speaking to my specialist nurse Tracy to try and help which bless her she did Slight smile

Gp thinks i have an overactive thyroid and has put me on Levothyroxine for a month then 2 weeks after i get another test for Thyroids ..If it isnt helping i will be put on stronger ones..This accounts for the hair loss 5 months after my treatment finished also tiredness being cold and weight loss..At least now i will have one thing sorted :) well, hopefully after next test i will know for def.ive never had thyroid probs but wondering if this could also be brought on by my treatment..

  • Hi Susie. Did your blood test specifically cover thyroid? Have a look in your nhs app.
Are you eating well? That might make a difference too

  • I doubt that a routine blood test would cover thyroid.  You need a TSH and a Free T4 blood test for thyroid - or at least one of them.

  • Hi Dani

I dont see anything that mentions thyroid, although if they use chemical names lol i wouldnt know what to look for..

  • Thanks Peter, can you ask the gp for the tests ? i will have a look at your journey :)

  • Thyroid would be there if they had done it. All HNC patients should have their thyroid tested every year because the radiotherapy can impact the gland.
Your GP should OK it. You need not only T4( which is thyroid hormone ) but TSH which is the hormone that stimulates the thyroid. It’s on a feed back system and you can have a normal T4 with a high TSH which means the thyroid is failing and the TSH is telling it to work harder.

  • the gp said about the abnormal tsh in Dec not to worry about it as its only slightly high..Strange

  • TSH is produced by your pituitary. If it is raised you are edging into subclinical hypothyroidism. Ie. No symptoms but whatever is left of your thyroid is working harder. If that was happening to me I would be asking for thyroid tests every six months.

  • My GP does the tests for me.  I had to ask for T4 to be reintroduced as the GP had dropped down to just TSH and my consultant wanted both.  I am on thyroid replacement and nowadays I just ring up the surgery and book what I need when I need and the GP signs it off!

  • hi Thankyou for your response,i telephoned my dr to ask about getting the proper testing and also my tsh was abnormal in Dec 2025 i was told they would be in contact,I received nothing yet to me this is important as i am struggling to gain weight my hair is disappearing fast im tired and also i get itchy .skin I am not sure if this has to do with my thyroid but you would think they would do more.If i dont hear anything i will phone my wonderfull Macmillan nurse for help, shes been amazing. Although i am seeing my surgeon Mr Crank on the 16th Feb i would imagine he will help..

  • Failing everything get your surgeon to specify in his post appointment letter to the GP that he requires thyroid tests to be done.  It is quite normal for this to be requested of the GP.  Tiredness was the main symptom that drove me to request thyroid testing but I also had weight issues  and itchy skin.  Good luck.
