hi

i finished my treatment on the 12th Sep ,30 radiotherapy and 5 chemo,im still having problems with hair loss ? is this normal..my hair is long and used to be incredibly thick now its so thin a ponytail would just look silly..but ive still got lots of long strands coming out and now starting to get worried.i did lose all of my hair at the back on the base of my head but thats growing back slowly but what i have left of my long hair is still coming out big time..I am being very gentle with it i have had a blood test which shows my iron etc is satisfactory.i was thinking it could be a thyroid problem but that would have showed in the blood test i think.

Any advice will be much appreciated

i have just seen in Dec i had a tsh test which shows abnormal,my jan 26 blood test had at4 test which shows normal but no tsh test in Jan 2026

  • Hi Susie. Did your blood test specifically cover thyroid? Have a look in your nhs app.
Are you eating well? That might make a difference too

  • I doubt that a routine blood test would cover thyroid.  You need a TSH and a Free T4 blood test for thyroid - or at least one of them.

  • Hi Dani

I dont see anything that mentions thyroid, although if they use chemical names lol i wouldnt know what to look for..

  • Thanks Peter, can you ask the gp for the tests ? i will have a look at your journey :)

  • Thyroid would be there if they had done it. All HNC patients should have their thyroid tested every year because the radiotherapy can impact the gland.
Your GP should OK it. You need not only T4( which is thyroid hormone ) but TSH which is the hormone that stimulates the thyroid. It’s on a feed back system and you can have a normal T4 with a high TSH which means the thyroid is failing and the TSH is telling it to work harder.
