Moving on from neck radiotherapy

This forum has been a huge help to us, you have been reassuring and honest.
My OH had 30 sessions of radiotherapy for cancer on his right tonsil and lymph node, which he finished 10 weeks ago. No chemo. He managed without tube feeding, which was a real struggle.

In the second week of his radiotherapy he sustained a rotator cuff injury, which caused him severe pain and interrupted his sleep significantly. Since then he has been in hospital twice with pneumonia and pulmonary embolisms. Loathing for Fortisip drinks has spurred him on with eating, and he was signed off with the dietician yesterday as he is managing to eat three fairly good meals a day with snacks. This is with some discomfort because of sore mouth and throat, not much taste yet either. But he hasn’t had a fortisip for over a month which he is very happy about. His energy levels are still low, but considering what else he has had to contend with, that’s not surprising! We plod on. He now has lymphoedema in his neck and face, so today we start learning to deal with that. Does anyone have advice or suggestions?

Ask for referral to the hospital lymphodema clinic where he can be shown the most effective way to massage

Meanwhile have a look at my blog entry which may give you some pointers and a simple routine to try

  • Hi.  As Dani says ask for a referral to your lymphoedema clinic.  It is likely that he will only need to be seen once to explain how to manage the swelling.  If you look at my profile there is a link at the bottom to some specialist massage techniques as recommended by my hospital.  They should help whilst waiting for an appointment.

  • Hi, he seems to be doing very well, so early in his recovery. My advice would be keep doing what he is doing, he's doing great.
