hi

This is just an update ..im still in recovery i did get quite bad lymphodemia on my face and neck and still have the big lump on my neck ,i have been told it takes time ,i see my Oncologist on the 3rd Dec and hopefully be told all is ok with the tumour i had, fingers crossed its gone .I am drinking though i have to gulp twice and everything tastes vile, ive tried custard and jelly and soup ..disgusting but i managed some,im still taking fortisips through my peg ..i really want to eat normal food but not sure how long that will take .my cancer was base of tongue.I dont think the lymphodemia in my neck is helping and im going for an mri on it in a couple of weeks ?? is that normal or am i not being told something.i have had numbness from my lip down my chin feels a bit like when you get numbed from the dentist but mine is not going away im not sure if thats part of the lymhodemia as it started at the same time.I know lots of concerns but it would be good to know others have went through the exact same and came out the other end.I have been to a speech therapist who also said shes not sure why my bottom lip and chin are numb..She suggested nerve damage, now im wondering will it ever get better..i am being given exercises to do which i will i also see the dentist in a fe days hopefully she can help...

  • Hi Susie, you are still in early days of your recovery, things do take a while to settle back down after treatment, your body has had a real bashing, now it needs time to heal itself. Just try to eat what you can, use your PEG as much as you need to. When you see the oncologist tell him how things are. Having an MRI scan is usual 12 to 16 weeks after your treatment finishes, so they can have a look at how things are. Take care give yourself time to heal, you will get there.

  • thankyou Ray im one of these people that has no patience lol i do need to learn patience and say to myself 30 radio and 5 chemo takes its toll although i am surprised how its the recovery rather than the treatment thats the worse..you are very kind replying and thankyou so much Slight smile

  • I think Ray has summed it up nicely.  I just went back to look at my profile for my recovery timeline and you are about on track with me.  In looking at my timeline I noticed I said "Treatment is brutal, recovery is torture".  By that I meant I just wanted to recover but it takes time - a long time.  And it is frustrating with often 2 steps forward and one back.  Keep going a try and push yourself to experiment.  That way you will soon learn what works at that particular stage of recovery.  Alas what works today often does not work next week so you have to keep exploring the boundaries.

All said it is more than worth it when you do get to the "new normal".  Big hugs from me.

  • Hi like others have said it’s really early days. Treat recovery like a marathon not a sprint. My oncologist said he was looking to cure me he also apologised for taking a year  out if my life. He did both but in exchange for many  many more years. Treatments hard recovery can be long but it’s worth it. Radiotherapy and chemo takes it’s toll on you   Stick with us we’re all happy to help.
