Peg / Rig surgery

After the peg / rig is fitted through your abdomen and into your stomach, did anyone have to take time off work to recover from the procedure?

  • I would think you might need a little. My husband had a sore and bloated tummy  first weekor so, and you can’t do any heavy lifting.

  • I was retired at the time, spent a night in hospital, abdominal muscle pain for about a week, could have sat at a desk but no heavy manual work.

    Everyone is different.

  • Thanks Micky. When I left school my retirement age would have been January. But now I have to work another four years.  I'll see how I get on after Monday. My part time job isn't stressful and the hotel where I work have been amazingly supportive.

  • Hi

I’d recommend eyeing up a few days off after the procedure. I wasn’t in terrible pain but it was uncomfortable and I had a lot of stomach muscle spasms for a week at least. Apparently this was due to my rock hard abs! I jest a little. I’d also recommend purchasing the pouch that you can house the tube in, it keeps it a little more comfortable rather then taping it to one side which I did for too long. The other thing to bear in mind is this ‘new’ way of feeding yourself and preparing to feed via the tube. You’ll need a bit of privacy and space to use it when at work. Even if you don’t need it straight away get a few practice runs in. You learn quickly though when you forget to pinch the tube before connecting the syringe.

    good luck, you’ll be fine.

  • Hi Stevie30e348,

I would recommend you take time off after your peg is fitted as you will probably be uncomfortable for a few days and quite tired. A district nurse came to see me at home after the op to show me how to look after my peg and how to use it. You will need a few days to get used to all this and rest.

  • Hi Ozzy you mention a pouch you can use to store the RIG. Do you have any details? I been trying to find one on Google but nothing with good reviews. My husband has already had to have a replacement  RIG fitted after the first one came out.

  • This may or may not help. I had a PEG and used a sticky pad designed for a urinary catheter to hold it on my abdomen and stop it moving around.  I also wore a vest to isolate the tube from the rest of my clothing.

I do recall getting an elasticated waistband to tuck the tube into by did not get on with that so binned it very quickly.
