Large swelling under chin

Hi All, hubby diagnosed with tonsil/soft palette SCC hpv+ back in March, he had 6 cisplatin chemo weekly and 35 radiotherapy treatments. All finished the beginning of July. He then had a really rough few weeks with mucositis and deep mouth ulcers but seems to be coming through this now. The last few weeks he has developed a very large swelling under his chin. It’s like a massive double chin but very bulky. It’s not a solid swelling but not completely soft either. He has spoken to his H&N cancer nurse and she said it sounds like a salivary issue and may never go away. (Thus was over the phone) He does have an extremely dry mouth but is so self conscious of this swelling. Has anyone else had this? If do any ideas how we can try and reduce it?

  • Hi. It sounds like lymphodema which is much more likely than saliva. If your husband has had radiotherapy the chances are that he has no functioning salivary tissue under his chin.
I had the same and massaged it away. There is a short video of a simple massage on my blog. He could try that and meanwhile get back to the hospital to get a lymphodema clinic referral.

  • Thanks you so much for your reply. This is what I’m suspecting and so will push for him to get it looked at (rather than over the phone)

  • I had similar after Chemoradiotherapy, oncology identified it as lymphoedema, I was shown how to massage the affected area, worked a treat, I still massage the area every morning after shaving....my treatment finished over two years ago.

  • I agree with the others. Lymphoedema is the most likely issue.  In my profile is a link to the massage technique recommended by my lymphoedema nurse.  Often you only need to see them once to understand the condition and how to self help.  After that looking after it becomes second nature
