i have not been on for a while ,the last couple of weeks of radiotherapy and chemo one day a week i wasnt doing that great but now o after finishing i think im turning a corner my weight dropped but looks like now got that sorted, im still very tired when doing things but i suppose its not that long since i finished and i know i need to crawl before i can walk. i am on constant food through my rig which was fitted back in June and thankfully this horrible mucositis i have is easing slightly ,i am tring my best to still take sips of water through my mouth and it is very hard as my throat is really sore,i would love to chance having a little tomato or chicken soup but not sure if i will end up with it going down into my lungs .i also havent spoken for 3 weeks my voice just went,i am practicing the odd letter ,,im desperate to talk again ..Is anyone else going through similar or can give some tips maybe . ive got an Oncologist appointment on the 21st Oct which im quite scared about as i dont know if all of this has worked.

  • Hi Susie. Well done.
First…. Treatment failure is very rare so try to relax. You won’t know if there is any cancer left til after your 12 week PET/CT but like I said it’s rare.
Second. Do try the soup( but not tomato which is acidic) you really need something with a little body to it for your throat to work round. Something like chicken noodle. Don’t worry about it going down into your lungs. If a tiny bit goes the wrong way all you’ll do is cough it up.
Try Ready Brek with added cream which finer than porridge or a store bought trifle or custard pot, maybe even a mashed banana
Be prepared for it to taste wrong or not at all.
    Good luck

  • Hi Susie. Well done for getting through the treatment. My husband finished his treatment just a few days before you. I admire yours and his courage. He is able to now swallow his cocodamol which is soluble and have flavoured water or cordial. So far we haven’t found anything he likes the taste of so food is still going in via the Rig. Thank goodness for that tube!
He saw the nutritionist last week and she checked his swallowing and said it was ok to try soft foods now. He hasn’t liked soup or yoghurt so far. It’s a bit of a battle.
I really hope your recovery is going well. X

  • I could not be bothered talking due to the pain in my mouth and throat and when I did manage a few words it was basically a croak, others would ask me to repeat myself which made matters worse. Constantly sipping a little water helped. My voice eventually recovered and gained in strength but it did take a few weeks
