Hello everyone,

My mum was diagnosed with tonsil cancer (T3 N1 M0) in march this year, completed 6 weeks of radiotherapy/chemo on 6th June.

She's had a bit of a rough ride with various issues (they said she was in the unlucky 10% that seem to get all the problems etc)

She had her post treatment MRI scan on Monday, her cancer nurse called today to say that the primary cancer in the tonsil has gone, but there is still some stuff showing up in the lymph nodes. Obviously it's brilliant news that the primary has gone but we are worried about themis activity in the lymph nodes still. They are going to rescan in 3 months.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it just be scar tissue? Or that's she's got a bit of infection somewhere (she's had countless infections!)

Thank you once again for your input.

  • Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes. It’s common. I’m betting that the re scan will be negative. PET can’t differentiate between cancer and inflammation sometimes

Lymph nodes can take a long time to respond to RT

I had a hot spot where the original cancer was. Luckily I didn’t have to wait for a rescan but had a biopsy which was negative.

  • Hi Kernow83, that is great news the primary has gone. Like Dani says this does happen quite often, hopefully the next scan will show it's all gone. Lots of hospitals are now delaying the post scan treatment, for this very reason.

  • Looking at your forum name am I right in thinking your mum was treated at the RCH?

    Ray.

  • Yes that's correct, they've been absolutely amazing. We're very lucky.

  • I had my treatment there in 2017, I couldn't have wished for better care, they were brilliant. I can't thank them or the NHS enough.

  • Hi, definitely good news that the primary cancer has gone. I was in a very similar position. My treatment ended last October and my first post treatment PET scan was in January. This showed ‘avidity’ (another word I wasn’t previously aware of) in a lymph node and I was given a follow up scan and biopsy in May. This showed that the avidity had significantly reduced and unlikely to be of concern. Hopefully it will be the same for your mum, it does seem something that is often experienced. I had a follow up clinical appointment today and the oncologist was very happy with the way things are.
my very best wishes to your mum
