Hi Everyone,

Yesterday evening everything was ok then suddenly like a the flick of a light switch I started feeling sore on the side of my tongue and back of my throat ( where most treatment was aimed)

Woke up this morning the same pain was there. Just by chance I had an appointment with my ENT consultant this morning for my 6 weeks check.

I told him the problem ,he asked the usual questions and did a physical exam of my neck , checked my mouth and tongue ,then did the nasal scope thing. He said there is nothing of concern to be found and said it might have been aggravated by something.

I hadn't had any spicy food or food that hurts me so I'm in a conundrum how it came about. Its a soreness that I haven't experienced in ages .I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen ?

Cheers Mark

Yes, I get phantom throat and tongue irritation even six years on. If there is nothing to see then there’s nothing there so relax.

  • I’m only a year down the line and sometimes if I have spicy food, I feel it the next day. My throat isn’t very happy when I do that.

The good thing is you’ve had a timely appt and the expert is happy. I happened to be up recently for a check up where a mucous retention cyst was observed on the nasal scope. Worrying yes and it may have to be removed in time but my consultant put me at ease with it and I’m now not worrying about it. Hopefully the pain subsides soon.

  • My apologies, I misread your post and I thought you’d said you had eaten spicy food. I sometimes get little pains without having had any spicy food too. Remember that the throat etc has had a lot of work done to it and little niggles from time to time are expected and of course, worth getting checked out, which you have done thanks to your appt. Thumbsup

  • Thanks Dani ,

It's just so weird that you can feel this but consultant can't see owt !! I may have over stretched my tongue doing the exercises, but who knows ,I just go with my consultant,I've trusted him this far . Its that new sensation anxiety again.i need to let it go !! X

  • Cheers Chris,

I do get anxious when a new niggle comes along ,my consultant says it's very understandable ,but in this instant everything looks ok .

  • .i need to let it go

Hi Mark. It’s not easy but it does eventually let you go.

  • Thanks Dani

Your reassurance helps a lot x

  • It happens to me.  Sometimes I can identify something that may have triggered it but often not.  The mind can run riot at this stage but for me the soreness often settles down overnight but occasionally it lasts for a couple of days.

If you have had it checked out, try not to overthink the situation and trust in their expertise.

  • Thanks Peter,

I definitely can't pin point where this has come from. But like you say trust the professionals.and hopefully it will settle down

  • Yes. 5 years on and I still get odd sensations in my throat. Sometimes it’s food, sometimes, oddly, it’s driving a long distance (it’s the angle I hold my neck I guess). Most often though I can think of no cause. It just kicks off for no apparent reason. I’ve learned not to panic and it’s always sorted itself out after a couple of days.
