Hi there Lillian back again

T3N2BMO P16 positive SCC right tonsil

I am now 2 and a half year post treatment and my swallow is not improving.  It did improve for a few weeks but now it is as bad as ever and my mouth is dry beyond belief.  Please, if anyone has any advice or suggestions I will be very grateful

  • Hi Hazel, the Zylimelts are no good for me as I have hardly any gum left to hold them in.  It’s the swallowing that I have trouble with and I thought that after all this time it would be easier. I am really suffering from food envy at the moment lol and it’s not helping at all.  I am pleased that both you and Dani are both doing well and keeping up the good work, I don’t know what I would have done without you a lot of the time.

    Take care Lillian x

Last time you posted a couple of months ago you said you had an appointment coming up. Did you get that and what did your consultant say. Should you be asking for a swallow test I wonder?

  • Hi Dani, he just said to keep trying and that the extra dry mouth was due to the warmer weather. Got some of the dry mouth spray from Boots today and will give it a try.
I have also ordered the pastille that you suggested so I will give them a try.
Thanks again for your help and I will keep plodding on.

    Take care, Lillian x

  • I use Bach's rescue night pastilles to aid saliva production and as a sleep aid, also has a laxative effect, a bonus for those who are on opioid meds.... lavender in the pastilles has a calming effect..... pastilles also contain xylitol

    HELLO,

I'm Dave (age 77) and after tonsils removed, 6 weeks radiotherapy and an operation to "clean up" what was left, I am now (almost exactly) 4 years since last active treatment:  Like you, I had improvements in my swallowing, but also like you, it is now pretty much as bad as ever, with a VERY dry mouth (particularly overnight),

I have tried many "saliva replacement" stuff (oralieve spray, mouthwashes, overnight patches and so on) and none have given me more than a few minutes relief, I now accept that this is probably as good as it gets and I have "got used to" my new mouth and the way I have to eat, it's not perfect but I have adapted to it and enjoy life to the full.....for a 77-year old!!!

I have much to be grateful for and I've been treated wonderfully with expertise, dignity and courtesy by Felindre Cancer Centre (Cardiff) and my local ENT Unit at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

If I don't live to age 102, I feel I have let my "team" down.
