I'm just back from my 6-weekly check-up with my head and neck consultant at Pinderfields Hospital. All clear so far, it's been almost a year since my treatment finished. My appointments are now 8 weekly. Feeling very grateful for small steps forward.

Hi Miclee welcome to the forum..So pleased to hear your good news. Time for a celebration and start to live again instead of life being on hold. Best wishes Gail

  • Hi again. Great to get those appointments stretched out

Sometimes I think we get reviewed too much. Once we get to two years it’s reckoned we are ok as most recurrence is in that two years. Onward and forward.

  • Granny59. Thank you x

  • Yes, definitely. I don't mind the frequency, I get anxious close to the appointment but the reassurance is needed as I always think its going to come back. I mentioned being clear to my consultant, his reply was, we can talk about that after 5 years. 2 sounds much better to me. Thanks for that x

  • Hi great to get first year over. Do they count year one as date RT finished or date of first max fax apt after RT which for me was sept and I finished RT end June but attended oncology dept for six weeks after RT ended. My max fax is very very positive he never mentions recurrence and when I was a bit anxious at one of my appointments he told me he got everything and the RT was belt and braces and that some hospitals wouldn't have done it. That reassured me. It's great to see the appointments being changed to every two months after first year but on the other hand it's like a security blanket knowing it's only a month apart lol. X

  • year one as date RT finished

    Yes.

Some trusts actually "discharge" you to PIFU five years after your post treatment PET

  • I believe its a year for the last radiotherapy session. Don't quote me, I'm sure that's what I heard.

  • That sounds right. I do think it gets easier as the time goes by. I felt less anxious and didn't think about it all as much this past few weeks. This time last year I couldn't even put a grain of rice in my mouth . One year later and i can eat nearly everything. What a difference a year makes x

  • Yes one year since your last radiotherapy session. I’m coming up to 7   years 31 August. The visits to ent do get further apart  my last 2  years were every 6  months. But in my last appointment it was reiterated that any issues I was to contact either my Macmillian nurse or consultants medical secretary. Which is reassuring this is an open ended appointment so no need to go back to gp.
