Hi everyone. Husband  successfully treated for tonsil cancer 2 years ago with surgery, chemo and a lot of radiotherapy. Bit concerned that recently his memory has deteriorated and he is muddling words sometimes too. He's got a follow up appointment soon, but I am a bit concerned about the increased risk of dementia. I know isn't necessarily that, but I know it is a recognised risk. Anyone else had similar?

  • a lot of radiotherapy

    Hi. How much?
We usually get 65 to 73 Rads.
I had 65, I mentioned to my oncologist that I was losing words but he rightly pointed it that I was in my early 70s and I might just be old.
That was three years ago and I don’t think I have deteriorated.

  • Hi Dani. I know he had 35 sessions, not sure what that is in rads. The muddling words is new. Short term memory got a bit worse. He's 58, and has had to go back to work ( 12 months ago).

  • He is still under frequent review so mention it at his next one. The other thing I might suggest is a quick visit to his GP to make sure he hasn’t had a TIA. RT can affect the carotid arteries

  • Well it depends what you call frequent,he gets seen at hospital about once every 4 months now. Fortunately he has appointment this week.

  • Well it depends what you call frequent

As opposed to every six months in the last year.
I would have suggested that if his next appointment was distant that you phone his CNS asking to be seen earlier but you have already clarified that point

  • ''Chemo brain'' affects some patients, over 2 years ago I had 30 radiotherapy and 6 chemotherapy, now some days are quite frustrating as I can find my concentration is not quite 100%, I suspect quite a few others suffer from the latent effects of chemotherapy. The subject was never discussed by my oncology teams or my GP.

  • Sorry Dani, I don't understand the 6 month bit?

  • I meant that at least he is seem more regularly than the six month interval we get in our last one or two years but it is of no consequence. He has an appointment soon and you’ll be able to discuss it
