Low Blood Pressure Issues

Hello all, my husband is in the fourth week of RT and Chemo. He is now taking Fortisip as prescribed via his stomach tube and drinking sips of water regularly. Before this treatment began he had never had blood pressure problems. Unfortunately during the past three weeks his blood pressure has been too low and he has actually fallen during three dizzy spells at home. Despite reporting to all medics involved the situation has not been addressed or improved and I wonder if anyone on

here had experienced similar problems and were you able to sort them? Thanks x

  • 2 years since chemoradiotherapy finished, I have been bothered with Tinnitus, some days worse than others, intermittent dizzy spells, blood pressure seems to be OK, I have just been putting it down to late Chemo side effects

  • Thanks Micky, he has just started with Tinnitus but the dizziness means he can’t move around much. Hope it’s only temporary. Thanks for your input.

  • I had low blood pressure during my treatment, I fainted twice at home( I'd never faint before in my life). I should have had 6 full days of chemo, however my blood pressure was too low to have the 6th, which isn't unusual. As long as you have let medics know, they will probably be keeping their eye on it.

  • he has just started with Tinnitus

If this is new please report it. Cisplatin can cause this and it might be permanent

  • Thanks Ray, he has told medics and they have advised he makes sure to have 2 litres of water daily and have tweaked his meds adding more Magnesium. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

  • Hi Lynda. I had low blood pressure on and off during my radiotherapy treatment and for a while afterwards although I had never had issues previously. I had to make sure when I stood up that I waited for a short while before walking so my blood pressure would equalise otherwise I would get dizzy after I started walking. Also had issues if I put my head down when picking something up from the floor. It did settle down eventually but I still have to make sure I drink enough water or it can re-occur if I get slightly dehydrated. Someone did explain once on this forum why it happens but not sure if I remember it correctly. Something with the radiotherapy being near the carotid artery (??) or something to that effect. Someone will probably put me right on that and give the correct explanation.

  • Hi Lyn, my husbands problems seem to be the same as you experienced. I have passed what you say on to him. Thank you for your input.

  • Just found out that the blood pressure problems were not helped by the fact that he was prescribed Ramipril following his heart attack two years ago and nobody reviewed his meds or thought to take him off them. Par for the course for his treatment by the medical staff at the moment but thankfully he only has a week more of treatment and we can begin getting him ‘back to normal’.

  • Forgot to add, he has nothing but praise for Radiotherapy Team, Chemo Team and Oncologist. The rest of his treatment from Transport to Medical Nurses has been nothing short of appalling.
