Depression

During or after treatment did anyone feel depressed and need antidepressants? My husband is finished now for over a year and not that happy. He’s going every three weeks to immunotherapy and everything seems good so I thought he’d be happier. I mention antidepressants but he says he doesn’t need them. Just wondered what others thought. Thanks

  • I can't speak for myself as I was cured and I'm six years out of treatment but I can only imagine how it must feel living from scan to scan which must be the case with immunotherapy for some people. Maybe counselling might be a better avenue to pursue? Would your husband consider that?

  • I agree with Dani about trying for counselling rather than happy pills.

One of the hospitals my bloke was in decided, without telling either of us, to put him on sertraline for his 'moods'.  I reckon I'd have been moody too after what he'd already been through at that time and what was still on the agenda!

The meds had a dire effect on him, emotional blunting causing complete lack of empathy and an inability to cry.  The worst was he started playing mind games with me, via text as he couldn't speak.  As he was in a hospital several miles away, I was at a loss at what to do and it was so unlike him to behave like that.

I'm not suggesting your husband would react the same, but do speak to your team about potential side effects.

    Good luck.

  • Hi. I would try counselling as what he’s going through is life changing. It could help him more  talking with a trained counsellor as opposed to taking yet another tablet.

A friend  of mine is ‘living with cancer ‘ he’s had immunotherapy a few years ago and at the moment having scans twice a year or so and is in a stable position. He says it helped him.

  • Treatment scars a lot of us physically and mentally, I did have some days when my mood was very poor, unable to function properly, it passed, exercise helped. I thought about asking the doctor for some medication to help me through, decided against it after consulting my Mac nurse.
