Hi. Currently in palliative care , anyway i have really bad oral thrush, its ok until i try to eat and then terrible like eating glass . Any suggestions? On Nyscan which seems to cleared up mouth but not throat
Hi Brian
Has fluconazole been tried? That's more effective for post RT oral thrush. You can get lidocaine lollipops if it's really horrid but not every hospital has them. Worth asking.
I had oxetecaine when I was in. treatment ...that's like gaviscon with a local anaesthetic which you swish around/gargle then swallow.....not at good as the lollipops though
Soluble aspirin gargle then spit.
Have you oromorph? You can use that as a gargle too

Hi , actually just starting fluconzole in morning, any good ?
Yes it usually works well. Make sure they have given you two weeks. One week may not tackle it.

Hi Brian. Unfortunately you just have to persevere with the treatment. The last lot of oral thrush I had took me 3 months to get rid of but it did go in the end. I was advised to use a bicarb and salt mouth wash to help and this did make a difference along with the treatment which in my case was nystatin as the doctor would not prescribe me flucanazole.
Scrupulous oral hygiene is also very important. I brush and use a mouthwash everytime I eat now as I want to avoid any more occurrences if possible.

unfortunately it is an absolute bu##er to get rid of, but between nystan and fluconazole I managed to eventually get rid of it.. it has been said before, but it is something you have persevere with I'm afraid..

I went through something similar, and I know how painful it can be. Nystatin helped my mouth at first, but for the throat it wasn’t enough, so my doctor switched me to oral fluconazole - Diflucan, which worked much better. In the meantime, I found that sipping cold water, avoiding acidic or spicy foods, and using a soft toothbrush helped ease the discomfort a bit. It’s definitely worth asking your care team about a systemic antifungal if the infection is deeper in your throat.
I also want to emphasize how important it is to use only high-quality Diflucan (fluconazole). With antifungal medications, quality really makes a difference — a poor or substandard version might not fully eliminate the infection and could even make it come back stronger. Personally, I always order my Diflucan from this trusted pharmacy: curecarry.com/categories/Anti-Fungal/Diflucan. They’ve always provided excellent quality, fast delivery, and I’ve been very happy with the results!
