7 weeks post treatment and dry mouth.

Hi everyone

I’m doing pretty well I think as I know it’s early days. I’m able to eat casseroles, potatoes and most vegetables taste reasonably ok. Sweet stuff is awful and  coffee (which I loved) still tastes horrible but tea is alright and water now tastes fine which is really helpful as I’m drinking a lot of it!

The last couple of days my mouth seems to be much dryer and I’m constantly either drinking water or sucking sugar free sweets. Also my lips feel dry all the time so I’m using lip salve all through the day. I’m assuming this is all normal and part of the recovery challenges? I’m having acupuncture which I’m sure is helping and managing at night with a humidifier and xylimelt, as well as drinking sips of water through the night that I’m doing in my sleep pretty much.

I can’t tolerate chewing gum yet as it’s too much, Im still rinsing with bicarbonate and salt and cleaning teeth 3 x a day. Anything else I can do that would help?

regards

Jane

  • Hi. Yes all this is about right. Try a pocket water spray instead of sipping water some of the time.

  • Hi yes you’re about right for your stage if recovery. As xx u says the water spray bottle helix as it durdnrceash away saliva but still keep on drinking. Later sugar free gin will help. I still use 1/2 an xyimelts at night but no longer wake up at all

Yes like you I don’t drink didn’t drink before treatment certainly can’t  now. Hooe yiure ok it does improve sometimes 2 steps forward and ine step backwards.

  • Just on sugar-free chewing gum, I found  spearmint milder than peppermint, maybe it's worth trying other flavours? I'm now 2 years post-treatment, no longer need to carry water when I'm out but I do like to have chewing gum on me in case my dry mouth gets bad, also I think it helps clean my teeth until I can brush. I like Milliways brand which is plastic-free.

Have look on Amazon. PUR and others do fruit flavoured gums which are kinder than mint

  • Thanks that’s a great idea, just wondering if it’s usual that my mouth is very tingly at the moment really regardless of what I eat, so even cleaning teeth does it. I’m assuming it’s all part of the recovery and just takes time?

I’m sure it is. Your battered mucous membranes are fighting back and the nerves take time
