As feared

My pet scan results showed a bright green in my tonsil which I was complaining about before my scan as I have been in pain since December with it slowly becoming more painful. To rule out remaining cancer it is likely I will need another biopsy. I.am so depressed, although I just knew due to the pain I've been going through it would not be good. I'm so scared. Has anyone else been through this .mine was hpv .

  • Ps. I forgot to say that my nymph nodes and everything else is ok

  • Hi Ange. Sorry to hear the results of the PET scan. This is the hardest time, waiting for a treatment plan but once that is in place things go forward and it becomes a bit easier to handle. Please remember that HPV cancers have a good reaction to treatment and they say there is a 90%cure rate so that is good. Everyone is scared when they get a cancer diagnosis as you are in unknown territory. This forum is a great place to get help and reassurance from those who have had the experience and understand what you are going through. There are many people on here who have had HPV related cancers and are doing really well after treatment. My cancer was not HPV related but I have still had a good result from my treatment for jaw cancer and living a great life again.

    Sending you positive thoughts.

I had avidity at the cancer site on my PET/CT at 16 weeks. I had it biopsied and it was clear. It's not uncommon unfortunately.

    Good luck

  • Hi AngeG,

My initial PET scan after treatment also showed bright green (hotspot) on my left tonsil (my cancer was on the right, base of tongue and in the right cervical lymph node). I had high doses of radiotherapy to both sides.  I know this type of news is scary and all the things that come with it, and I'm sorry you are feeling so depressed.  The doctor told me that my hotspot was likely due to inflammation from the radiotherapy, as the radiation continues to keep working weeks after treatment ends.  I was closely monitored and checked again 6 weeks later.  No cancer, just inflammation as they suspected.  I am sending you all the well-wishes and positive thoughts! Mine was as hpv, p16+ squamous cell carcinoma.

  • Hello Tara

Thank you so much for your reply.  Could you tell me whether you were in great pain in that area also before you got your result, because I an in terrible pain in that area

  • Hi Angela,

I’m sorry to hear you are in such pain. I know it’s miserable and uncomfortable.

Honestly at the time of my PET scan post-treatment, I had pain everywhere and I didnt feel more pain on one side or the other. It was all very painful for a long time.

What does your doctor say about you being in terrible pain? Have they provided any explanation? There’s so much inflammation in the neck and throat post-radiation.

  • Not really,  except to start taking the opiats again on a regular  basis. The first biopsy I had to determine my diagnosis became infected, so I'm not relishing another one. The ENT surgeon should be meeting with me soon to decide the best course of action.
