Hi just wondering if anybody noticed their fibrosis / stiffness in neck improve after seven months of RT . I'm about seven months post RT and some days I find it worse now than before. Just wondering if it does improve with time. Thank you , Jackie x

  • Hi Jackie. I developed a little five years down the line so I religiously do neck exercises now. I suppose it's worse if you had a dissection. Exercise exercise to keep the scarring away

  • Hi Dani, thank you. Yes I do exercise three times a day and thankfully no lymphodema but the stiffness is still there. I know it could be worse. My max fax consultant said you pretty know where you're at with things after one year. X

  • Exercises for life, then. I still do my jaw and swallow exercises. I read about folk suddenly getting problems swallowing years down the line and I don't want that. It's a pain but in the end these things just get just as routine as oral care.

I wonder whether a heat wrap might help too. I use one for my back and it gives a lot of relief. Husband has been icing his new metal knee and I suggested heat as well and that seems to help him move it more. Perhaps it relaxes the tight tissues?

  • Oh that seems a good idea will try that. Actually when I'm in the shower I noticed the hot water eases it xx thank you

  • Hi Jackie, I’m 6 months post RT and my neck is worse of a night (the reason I’m awake at this god forsaken hour!)

Im having more problems with jaw and neck pain than when I had my neck dissection. The pain does generally wear off throughout the day though.

  • Sue...Do you grind your teeth at night? Or maybe clench your jaw?

If either, a mouthguard might give you better sleep

You could consider a support pillow. This is the one I have. It's made a huge difference

  • Hi Dani, I did has a mouthguard fitted pre RT but since I’ve had 3 teeth out I don’t seem to bite my tongue anymore so I stopped using it. If it still fits I’ll give it a go, thanks for your advice.

I’m currently using two large pillows but will look into one like yours.

    Thanks again!

Sue. Husband just reminded me… get a couple of large square pillowcases while you’re shopping on Amazon. The pillow case does come off but it’s a pig to wash and there isn’t a spare so I pop mine into a large square Oxford pillowcase
