Just been for my 2/3 month check up with my consultant and asked about my swallowing and he asked if I had acid reflux and I said yes but he didn’t say anything about it, does anyone know if it would affect my swallowing and what would help.

Thanks. Lillian

  • Hi Lilian. Yes it could affect swallowing. Lots of us get reflux after RT. The pH of the saliva you swallow is changed and it upsets the whole balance in the stomach. I think putting patients on PPIs like lansoprazole is fairly routine. I take that still.

  • Hi Lillian reflux is very common after RT, I have Gaviscon advance on prescription, ask your GP to prescribe something for you.

  • 2+ years since chemoradiotherapy finished, PEG feeding caused acid reflux for me, unpleasant, persisted for about 12 months, I was given Omeprazole which did not help, caused a feeling of  bloating, not an issue now as reflux disappeared of its own accord.
