Hi. My husband had nasopharyngeal cancer stage 3. Just finished chemo and starting chemoradiotherapy Monday for 7 weeks . Good results so far as to the tumour shrinking, was 4 plus cm, but his voice seems to be getting worse to the point where he can hardly speak now. Am quite worried because he hasn't spoken properly since October 24 and iv even forgotten what his real voice sounds like now. He won't address the problem as he is struggling with the whole issue and he seems depressed even tho treatment is working. He is not coping with side effects very well and now I'm struggling to cope as well. Has anyone's voice returned after treatment or is this the normal now. His doctor just say he's not sure yet.

There is nothing to address. He just has to go with the flow. The next three months are going to be pretty ghastly, I'm afraid.
Do ring the Macmillan Support Line. there is free counselling available via BUPA which might help.
Do you have a Maggie's near you? Both of you would benefit from visiting. They are great people there.

Most people do speak again. I think they doctors never give anything away...they can't

Hi As Dani says you can onky go with the flow. He’s going to be frightened I know I was. It’s fear if the unknown our treatments hard it in an extremely sensitive area and we get zapped and chemicals put into us. But remember the vast majority of us come through it and 7 years later I’m still here. I have a friend who we met in treatment like me he’s 7 years for nasopharyngeal cancer and he’s back working g in a building site his voice is as it was before maybe a little hoarser.
Take time for yourself I made my hubby go out every day 2 reasons gave me a break and him a break from me
go for a coffee with a friend or a walk

Thankyou Hazel. I think that's what we need , a break from each other now and again. It sort of takes over life if you let it xx
Hi Lynne It can do hence why I made my hubby go out to see a friend only across the road but gave us both space. I’ve admitted before and will do again sometimes I wasn’t very nice to my poor hubby while I was in treatment. We’ve been married now over 45 years and we don’t argue never have done but we ,well me had words once or twice. John bless him didn’t react he just let me rant .Its stressful and frightening but we got through it.
I also found it easier for me to go into the spare bedroom that way if I wasn’t sleeping I didn’t disturb him ,John was my rock he drove me he took me everywhere he cooked cleaned washed ironed shopped, which left me free as he said to concentrate on treatment and more importantly recovery. As it’s a marathon not a sprint. Any questions just ask someone’s always around to help.

I moved into the spare room to give my husband space.
I lie! It was to give me space. There were times when his “looking after” me verged on the manic so it’s worth considering that the patient may need the space too
