Gum

Hi everyone,

Decided I'd try sugar free gum to stimulate my saliva glands ( if I have any now) but it caused me a lot of eye watering pain and soreness. Just like most foods I'm trying!! ,I'm beginning to think that my throat isn't going to heal at all !! Just ending week 8 post RT , am I trying to turn this into a sprint? I called my CNS and she still is not overly concerned with my recovery and says we are all different. Unless I was showing signs of infection etc  She was willing to get a doctor to see me but she said if I can wait till Monday  as I'm due to see dietician and SLT then also.

I really am unsure whether I should be feeling this pain swallowing now or am I too impatient ?my oncologist says I'm on the lowest pain meds they offer. What I'm on -

Fentanyl slow release patch (lowest) every 3 days

10ml pregabalin morning and evening

5ml oxycodone 4 X day

30/500 cocodamol 4 x day

Difflam around 4-6 times a day

Plus bioxtra mouth wash to use when needed.

I was hoping to start lowering or stopping some meds ,but while my throat is still sore I'm thinking better of it !!

Thoughts anyone?

  • Still pretty early in recovery for most, I found Lidl's Jet sugar free (contains xylitol) gum pretty easy to take, I was still on Oramorph, MST and Cocodamol at the 8 week stage...by week 14 I had healed enough for a hernia repair op...

Still improving 20 months on...going for an Indian meal on Friday...going to ask for a couple of spoonfuls of Madras on a side plate....tempting fate?
