Hi everyone

I’ve just started week 5 and not sure what’s best to use at night? I’ve been given a tube of oralieve gel but it doesn’t seem to do much. Are there other products on prescription I could ask about or buy myself?

regards

Jane

I have two bottles of this if you’d like them. I don’t use anything now and these are in date till next year.

Look for chewing gum containing Xylitol.....stimulates saliva production....also found in various fruit and veg......

''Xylitol is a beneficial ingredient in products like sugar-free gum and sweets aimed at helping with dry mouth (xerostomia) as the act of chewing and the presence of xylitol itself can trigger salivary glands to produce more saliva''

  • Hi Jane

We need to be careful of our advice as you are still in treatment and what works post treatment is not always appropriate during treatment and in the early days of recovery.  Alas in many cases what works for one does not work for another.

At your stage I found a humidifier very useful.  I was also using a mouthwash called Oral 7 (not on prescription).  As I got further into recovery it was water (not particularly useful) and Biotine gel at night.

Later on I found chewing gum also helps when I am walking the dog keep my mouth moist.  When eating a milky coffee or tea worked well as a saliva substitute.  Now, I will also have a beer when eating.  Something slightly thicker than water I do find good as a saliva substitute when eating.

  • Thanks Peter

I’m using a humidifier and do find it helpful. I can’t use any of the chewing gum or xylitol mints etc at the moment as my throat is just too sore. I’m sure they will be helpful as I begin to recover. As you say, we’re all different.

    regards

  • Hi Jane, I’m only on week 2 and already have the dry mouth. Oraleive gel doesn’t seem to do anything for me either, I’ve ordered Biotene spray online and I’m hoping that will help. I use Xylimelts at night which are great, and sugar free gum is brilliant (that would probably be too strong for you at your stage if you have sores). I hope you find something that will help!
