Hi all, I had my surgery 3 weeks ago to remove a tumour and dysplasia on the side of my tongue.

3 weeks later, I am not in pain and I don't rake meds on it. The last check up was 1 week ago.

I am experiencing the following and just wanted sanity check from those who experienced similar situations.

1. Part of my tongue feels swollen or otherwise "stuck", i feel like I have a huge tongue tie and can't move it and feel this mass on the side the surgery happened on.

2. Occasionally tingling feeling on the surgery site. Usually in the afternoon/evening. It's like my tongue is partly bathjng in very fizzy water?

3. Since yesterday I felt this occasionally throbbing mild pain on the back side of my tongue. It goes away after a few minutes

4. The top of my tongue in the back of my mouth started feeling like someone made a horizontal papercut on it

5. The teeth on the side and where my tumour are ache woth different levels of pain and hurts when I brush. Makes me worried if there is anything in my gums.

Is this a sign of anything or just normal 3 weeks after surgery? This is my 2nd one in the same area, 2nd time was to go back to get all of it and cut deeper and wider to get the margins which were clear.

Thank you!

  • Hi. Surgery ( and RT/CRT) as well as the consequent swelling does a lot of nerve damage. While the nerves are sorting themselves out you get neuropathic pain. I got odd sensations all over the place when I was healing.

  • Thank you. It is so much better to hear it's expected.

  • I had very little pain ever after my partial glossectomy due to the numbness.

Then the tingling started, as Dani says it is the nerves healing.

The main pain I did have (over maybe 2-3 weeks after surgery) was pain in my jaw and ear which was due to the effetes of surgery.

The tongue swelling took several weeks to go down.

The numbness/tingling is still there in a small part of the tongue.

  • Hi Rowan points 1 to 3 were similar to the sensations I had after surgery.  Even now if I'm tired or stressed I feel as if my speech is muffled but other people  have not said anything.  Are you back to work yet?

  • Yes, I have been back to work for 1.5 weeks. Those who know said I should 7/10 compared to before and whose who don't probably have been too polite to ask.

Luckily so close to Christmas it has been quiet.

Thank you for confirming 1-3 were with you too so less to worry about.

  • Hi Rowan I had base of tongue surgery to remove tumour and my tongue took a while to settle. I got totally stressed out about it which looking back probably made my recovery harder.  I had so many weird sensations  and swollen tongue. A year on and I still get a swollen tongue mainly when I’ve been at work all day so a lot of talking or if I feel tried or stressed. I find sparkling water sets it off as well. It’s definitely healing all the time but I guess just takes time.  X

  • Thank you for your reply.

I have weird bits in the back of the tongue that feel like I have a dead slug ln my tongue. I know it's there but it feels numb, swollen and sloppy... And in front i feel like there is a hair wrapped on my tongue I can't get rid of. It sucks but hearing it happens is better than "Oh no that is unheard of, go to A&E!"
