Hi I’m a year on from tongue surgery and neck disection  and RT on neck. I’ve started to get a weird taste on the side of the tongue I had surgery. Has anyone else had this? I think I might have had it after surgery but it did go away.

Never had tongue surgery but 18 months post chemoradio for tonsil cancer I do get some strange tastes in my mouth ... usually disappears after a couple of days.....

Mention it to your oncology team?

  • Yes I have burning tongue on the treatment side with altered taste there too. It’s what I expected. It comes and goes I’ve just got used to it.

  • No surgery but do suffer with bouts of thrush on tongue, which leaves an awful taste in mouth

  • Hi, I’ve also had tongue surgery, right neck dissection and I am now 12 weeks post RT and I still have a bad taste in my mouth and am relying on painkillers. I’ve just been able to start eating easy meals like mash potatoes and gravy.

    Hope you soon feel better.

I have certain triggers which give it me I kept food diary and for me it’s strong mature cheese ( I love cheese) fermented foods. Pickles etc. I can go months then it starts again I’ve learnt to live with it. Oh the joys. Remember we are all different I had no surgery just chemo radiotherapy.
