I have suffering from oral dysplasia on the left side of my tongue for almost 20 years and had a various wider excision in the past. Unfortunately small cancer was found when I did the last surgery this July. It was stage 1 and all removed surgically with good margin.

Since then, I am seeing Maxillofacial consultant and Head and Neck surgeon every month. Any changes in my tongue and mouth make me very anxious and worried "what if".

I noticed small white dots on not where I had the surgery but above my wisdom teeth and I immediately contacted my surgeon.  They are not sure why there are there but they said they don't look sinister and are not concerned, but they gave me a choice of doing biopsy if I want to. I said yes. It is now making me more anxious.  Also, I have neck scan every 3 months and today is the first scan. I just don't know what to do with myself and just wanted to put my progress here. Thanks for listening.

  • Hi Ultra

You are in good hands, you have decided to keep on top of things.... better to be informed than be in the dark.

    Take care

  • Hi Peter

Thank you very much for your comments.  It is still scary even though I know that it is best to keep on top of things.

  • Seems to me that you are doing everything you can. Clearly with your history you are going to be hypersensitive to changes….even the benign ones.   I suspect we all are! It sounds as if your medical team are listening to you and following up on your concerns.  It’s not helpful to say ‘don’t worry’ so I won’t….but with your level of vigilance and the support of your team, you’re in a good position.

You say that the decision to have the biopsy is making you more anxious….but are you sure that had you not opted to do it the uncertainty would not have eaten away at you even more? I tend to agree with Peter that it’s better to be informed than in the dark and know what, if anything, you are dealing with rather than having your imagination run riot.

I hope the results of the biopsy will confirm your surgeon’s view that there is nothing to worry about.

    Take care

  • Hi Liz111

Thanks for your comment and yes, you are right. If I don't do biopsy, it will keep bothering me constantly, which is not good for my mental health.

I am so glad to be in this group. I am always supported by people like you. Thanks.

  • I hope your neck scan went well.

I have been having them every 3 months since my tongue cancer surgery. They are quick and painless.

  • Hi Haze

Thanks for your message as always.  I am on my holiday for a week from next week so that will keep me busy. I will do the biopsy when I come back from the holiday so hopefully the result will be ready before Christmas.

  • Hi teee7

Thanks for your message. Yes the neck scan went well. They did scan in my mouth but because I had so many operations in the past, I was told that it is difficult to see and they need to compare the result with the last scan.
