When does the pain stop?

Hi all, bit down today, had my PEG procedure, was fine until the anaesthetic wore off, now I don't know what to do with myself.  I can't remember the last time I had pain like it (not even when I had my tonsil removed and neck dissection.)  I have the dietician coming to show me how to clean and care for it tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to that, as I know he will be poking and prodding and at present it hurts to just get in and out of a chair, dress, undress etc., how do you sleep with it in?  Sorry to complain as I know most of you would have been through far worse.  I hope you are all doing well.  Thanks for listening.

Hugs, Hazel x

  • Hi Hazel, they are painful for a few days after being fitted, make sure you keep ahead with your painkillers, it should ease up over the next few days. When you have the stiches removed, it will be 100% better. It is well worth having, it will take all the worry away if eating becomes difficult during and after your treatment.

  • Hi Hazel

5-7 days of moderate abdominal muscle pain for me ...well controlled by meds, slept propped up....V-shaped pillow....PEG care is very important to stop infections....try to pre-empt inflammation  by having some steroidal anti-fungal cream supplied on prescription....rotate and advance your PEG as instructed

  • It's possible that it is too tight, mention it to your dietician.. they may slacken it off a little.. hope it settles down.

  • Was RIG rather than PEG for me. Pain was kept tolerable for first few days after the op to fit it with Morphine, but found once it was time to get the stitches out even the odd paracetamol worked.

Hospital kindly gave me some pairs of cut up knickers to wear round my waist to make things like sleeping and just being outside more comfortable.

Definitely worth having, as dread to think of the weight we would lose without them.

  • Hi Hazel,

I can't comment on peg much as I had  a Rig fitted. From what I can gather on the forum is that the peg is a better option and should calm down soon. My RIG he as caused me so much bother and pain ,I'm on 2nd course of antibiotics for it now. I know others have had the same experience too . I'm sure your Peg will settle down over the coming days , like said keep ahead of the pain!

    Speak soon Mark xx

  • Thanks Mark, yes, I know the trouble you have had with your RIG, I hope it starts to heal up quickly now with your second lot of antibiotics!  take care.

  • Thanks Peter, what I did last night (as I still have the dressing on that I left hospital with) was I got one of the very thin, very long scarves, that us ladies wear on an evening out (or similar) and tied it around my waist - like a cummerbund - and that allowed me to sleep without the worry of it catching on anything and pulling out.  It's just the pain when I do anything that requires abdominal/stomach muscles.

Yours looks like a good idea for when the dressing is removed.  Thank you.

Thanks Loz, yes, I will mention it to him today as he is coming to show me how to care for it and use it. Take care.
