Hi Everyone.

Just needing to seek opinions and experiences. My other half is 15 months post treatment for tonsil cancer and lymph node involvement. Physically he is well, albeit with some annoying lasting side effects. Mentally though things are not so good. He is being treated for clinical depression with meds. It's all reaction from everything he's been through understandably. Also his memory and concentration are not good. He had a lot of radiotherapy. We know this happens. I've also seen research that suggests an increased risk of developing dementia. Feeling concerned.

What do his team say about what you have read?

My short term memory and concentration were impacted, we get a hit to a part of the brain that is involved but it was temporary. By two years I was much better. The depression is like PTSD and it’s good it’s getting addressed. Has your husband access to counselling to reinforce the medication ?

  • Hi Dani. He doesn't really see the surgical team very often now. They don't know he's on meds now. He's had to fight for counselling, was told initially it was a 6 month wait! I'm concerned in case the memory and concentration don't improve. He's certainly not the same as pre cancer.

  • Hi Birdwoman

Aftercare is pretty grim, GPs are pretty much uninterested,10 minutes with oncology team every 3 months is inadequate IMO.... something that needs looking at.

  • Hi Peter

His GP has been very good tbf. Oncology team discharged him as soon as he got the all clear. I think their workload is huge. He has follow-up with surgical team, but not often at all now, maybe once every 4 months. Again I think it's due to sheer volume of patients...
