Travel Insurance

I know there is a Travel Insurance thread, but I though I would just update the group.

I have the Nationwide FlexPlus bank account with inclusive travel insurance.  Previously they have insured me for everything EXCEPT the cancer related issues.  Nationwide recently changed insurance companies to Aviva and I checked with them yesterday about my cancer, being 8 1/2 months post the last treatment.  They are again happy to insure me on the basis of worldwide cover with the exception of the cancer with no additional premium.  I am quite comfortable with this as we have learnt to book "last minute" to minimaise the risk of a cancellation due to the cancer and, if I have a problem from the cancer/treatment effects, I see virtually no reason why I would have to curtail my holiday instead of dealing with it on my return.

Hopefully this may help those wishing to travel but are finding getting insurance difficult.

  • Thank you Peter. That’s useful information. I am in the middle of a claim ( but not for cancer I would like to make clear) If you have insurance with a Bank, for heavens sake make sure you know exactly how they would deal with a claim, because they farm out claims to claims agencies and you are left in limbo. It pays to deal directly with the underwriter which is what you have suggested.

  • Useful to know.  I currently have an annual policy with LV, but for Europe only. Like yours, it covers me for everything  except the cancer.  We spend a lot of time in Cyprus and for extended periods. The LV policy covers 90 days at a time and is ideal for us.  I don’t worry about the cancer exclusion as we are only ever a 4-5 hour flight away…and in extremis,  medical services  in Cyprus are excellent, not extortionately expensive and, crucially, accessible usually within a couple of days at most.  Like you, I can see no reason why I should need to curtail breaks rather than deal with it on return…so I don’t worry about it.
