Sticky mucus and choking feeling

Hello all

My husband is now 9 months post treatment for base of tongue cancer, and he has the sticky mucus in his throat constantly. He also has the issue of feeling like the food is backing up in his throat and that he cant swallow it down...like he's going to going to choke.  I am wondering if this is normal?

Anyone who has the same problems, please let me know as at least he will know its normal, and not the return of a tumour as I think he fears it might be.

Many thanks

Denise

  • Hi I was still sipping warm drinks at the 9  month stages from memory to aid food go down. I would have a small sip  swill round swallow then  put food in and another drink to help it down. I had weird combinations as it was herbal tea I used to help what ever food  go down. Saying that I don’t recall I felt like I was choking whens his next review he should still be being seen regularly. I would contact his cns to ask for a swallow test. Doesn’t mean the cancers returned just needs checking everything’s working as it should be.

  • Best have it checked out but it’s likely to be just weak swallowing muscles or even reflux. Lots of us suffer with this after radiotherapy. How is the immunotherapy going?

  • Thanks for that Hazel.  He did have a swallow test 3 months ago and all was well.

Did you saliva ever get any better? His mouth is still so dry and no products help.

    thanks x

  • Yes l do nag him to do the throat exercises, as Im sure that helps the throat.

He says thanks for asking...the immunotherapy has shrunk the main tumour.  We have second scan next week...Fingers crossedFingers crossedFingers crossedFingers crossed

He has tiredness and itching, but so far all going ok..

  • Hi yes it did but  took a good few years.   I slowly got  improvements. I still use 1/2 xyimelt at night time but during the day I chew sugar free gum no longer need copious amounts of water but it does take time. If xyimelts didn’t work it’s always worth trying again. I still do the exercises   Even at  5 years I will do them forever.

Maybe he could try “ oil pulling”? This involves holding a sip of coconut oil in the mouth for 15 minutes or as long as he can.
With eating taking a tiny sip of a warm liquid to act as proxy saliva to chew. It works better than chasing food down with a large gulp of water.

  • Hi Denise

I was bothered with itching for a good few weeks....GP prescribed Chlorphenamine (Piriton) 3 x a day... took the edge off the itching allowing a better sleep.

  • My husband has oesophageal junction cancer ( so a bit different) but has the same symptoms as you. They've been going on for months with no effective intervention. However, he has now discovered that he has oesophageal thrush. It's not responding to Nystatin or to Fluconozole and at last hey are going to give him intravenous anti-fungals. worth asking about>

  • Thanks Dani he will try that.

  • Yes he has used the Anti Histamine regularly.  Thanks Peter.
