Hi everyone,
I'm almost 9 months out from finish of Chemoradiation. I didn't have a lot of mucus like so many others have described, but over the past 2 months or so, mucus is building up in my throat over the course of the day, very difficult to expectorate and it makes my speech sound weird. I asked re it at my last appointment 2 weeks ago (ENT) and was told 'it's normal, nothing available to help me get it up, and it's most likely permanent. Any one else have this problem and find anything that helped it. Also hoping someone can say that theirs wasn't permanent. Thanks Tima
Hi Tina
Five years out I have developed a sticky throat. I think the small salivary glands dotted about your mouth can fibrose as part of a long term late effect. I drink a lot of tea, mostly herbal, which helps. Morning is particularly noticeable and I try very hard not to cough and hawk but to slowly sip a warm drink to loosen it gently.
Do check that you're not having silent reflex too.
These late effects pop up all the time. You think you've got away with it and something else comes along

Hi Tina I also drink herbal tea which loosens up anything in throat. I’ve always drink herbal so it’s no big problem. There’s lots out there now days to try. I still gave the odd coffee but milk can make the mucus worse. Oh the joys. You might find things come and go I had burnin g tongue syndrome year 2 to 4 then it went as quickly as it came.

Hi Dani sorry to hear about your sticky throat. My husband is now 9 months post treatment and he has the sticky mucus too. He also has the issue of feeling like the food is backing up in his throat and that he cant swallow it down...like he's going to going to choke. I am wondering if this is normal? He had back of tongue cancer and I wonder if thats something to do with it...scarring, maybe? I will ask this on a new question to see if I can get some feedback. Hope youre well.

I find the only way around sticky mucous is to keep drinking warm drinks. I drink hot water and honey. Don’t enjoy the fruit teas anymore and my favourite red bush tea tastes like fish. I also drink through the night. I too get mucous build up at the back of my throat and as if food gets stuck there but I have solved it by drinking warm drinks.
